He proposed that 21 June be declared as the International Day of Yoga and that date was unanimously approved by the UNGA. What are the health benefits of Yoga? Kaminoff, Leslie; Matthews, Amy (2012) [2007]. Yoga Anatomy (2nded.). The Breath Trust. ISBN 978-1-4504-0024-4.

For many people today, the word “yoga” conjures up images of colorful mats, flexible bodies, and tight clothing. While these images may be great for posting on social media, they have little to do with actual yoga. In fact, yoga poses, or asanas as they are known in Sanskrit, are just a small part of the expansive system of yogic sciences that have been practiced for thousands of years. These sciences include the yamas and niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. You may be wondering why these are sciences, and not simply practices: like other sciences, countless testing has led to a series of steps that when followed correctly produce a replicable result. In the case of yoga, the result is a state of enlightened living. In this state, not only does your own life benefit, but also those of all with whom you interact, both personally and professionally. The 5 Yamas & 5 Niyamas Acott, Ted S.; Cramer, Holger; Krucoff, Carol; Dobos, Gustav (2013). "Adverse Events Associated with Yoga: A Systematic Review of Published Case Reports and Case Series". At some point on the yogic journey, one comes to the realization that behind all that we can see, hear, touch, taste, and know, there is something larger at work. A divine source, a supreme consciousness. It is to this that the yogi offers their practice and their progress.Yoga has been studied scientifically since the 19th-century physiology experiments of N. C. Paul. The early 20th-century pioneers Yogendra and Kuvalayananda both set up institutes to study yoga systematically. Sadhguru, looks at what kriya yoga means, and what it takes to walk this path and explore the very mechanics of the life process.

This is the kind of contentment that comes from within and is not based on external circumstances. The Yogi practices exercises by which he attains control of his body, and is enabled to send to any organ or part an increased flow of vital force or “prana,” thereby strengthening and invigorating the part or organ. He knows all that his Western scientific brother knows about the physiological effect of correct breathing, but he also knows that the air contains more than oxygen and hydrogen and nitrogen, and that something more is accomplished than the mere oxygenating of the blood. He knows something about “prana,” of which his Western brother is ignorant, and he is fully aware of the nature and manner of handling that great principle of energy, and is fully informed as to its effect upon the human body and mind. He knows that by rhythmical breathing one may bring himself into harmonious vibration with nature, and aid in the unfoldment of his latent powers. He knows that by controlled breathing he may not only cure disease in himself and others, but also practically do away with fear and worry and the baser emotions. Behanan, Kovoor T. (2002) [1937]. Yoga: Its Scientific Basis. Dover. ISBN 978-0-486-41792-9. originally titled Yoga: A Scientific Evaluation. A seeker asks Sadhguru, “What is tantra?” Sadhguru looks at the tantric tradition, and explains how the Guru-disciple relationship can definitely be orgasmic, but not sexual. A Brief History of Yoga

Having trouble with your dhanurasana. Here's a comprehensive guide to the science of asanas, what you can do go deeper into your practice, and how you can reap the most out of one's practice. Enjoy! Making The Most of Your Yoga Practice Known as Abdominal breathing, Deep Breathing or Diaphragm Breathing, is widely believed to be the best method of breathing in the West, and although it delivers more benefits that the two aforementioned types of breathing cannot match Complete Yogic breathing. Breathing and posture affect each other, especially through their effects on the diaphragm. [30] Breathing also affects the autonomic nervous system; quiet breathing slows the heart and reduces blood pressure. Together, these produce a feeling of calmness and relaxation. [31] One way to do this is used in one form of yoga breathing ( pranayama): the exhalation is counted to be twice as long as the inhalation, say inhale to a count of 3 and exhale to a count of 6. [32] Broad, William (2012). The Science of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards. Simon & Schuster. ISBN 978-1-4516-4142-4. Sadhguru says, “The word ‘Zen’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhyan.’ Gautama the Buddha taught Dhyan. Bodhidharma carried Dhyan to China, where it became Chan. This Chan went further down into Far East Asian countries, where it became Zen.

This is generally thought of as breath-work, and yet it is so much more. To understand it, we can look at the word itself. Prana can be translated as life force, and ayama means to draw out or extend. When put together, pranayama is about extending the life force, rather than just about breath control. Through increasing and enhancing the capacity to store prana, the yogi is able to experience and hold higher and higher states of consciousness as they move toward an enlightened state of being. Pratyahara Occultists in all ages and lands have always taught, usually in secret, that there was to be found in the air a substance or principle from which all activity, vitality and life was derived. The work of Yogi Ramacharaka describes the principle of “prana”, the Sanskrit word for “absolute energy.” Many occult authorities teach that the principle which the Hindu’s term “prana” is the Universal principle of energy, and that all energy or force is derived from that principle, or rather, is a particular form of manifestation of that principle. The Hindu Yogis have always paid great attention to the Science of Breath, for reasons which will be apparent to the student who reads this book. Many Western writers have touched upon this phase of the Yogi teachings, but we believe that it has been reserved for the writer of this work to give the Western student, in concise form and simple language, the underlying principles of the Yogi Science of Breath, together with many of the favorite Yogi breathing exercises and methods. We have given the Western idea as well as the Oriental, showing how one dovetails into the other. We have used the ordinary English terms, almost entirely, avoiding the Sanscrit terms, so confusing to the average Western reader.

Hatha Yoga: Align With The Divine

This little known yogic science is all about turning within. Rather than being bombarded with an overabundance of sensory input from the outside world, pratyahara guides the yogi to turn inward in preparation for the higher meditative practices. Pratyahara also calls on the yogi to be conscious and mindful of what sensory impressions are brought into the system, such as the kinds of film and tv shows that are watched, music listened to, and books read. Dharana, Dhyana, & Samadhi Karma Yoga is the path of selfless action. It is the path of service, where one uses physical action to evolve spiritually. What is Bhakti Yoga?
