Joyce’s epic novel is about regular people going about their lives on a single day in Dublin – 16 th June, 1904. The novel is celebrated on the same historic date every year. The day is known as ‘Bloomsday’, after the main character Leopold Bloom, and Joycean enthusiasts dress in Victorian attire and visit venues that feature in the novel all across Dublin. Away from the writers’ enjoyment of a dram, the Irish whiskey barons were rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills. The barons were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible and at that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others. Known as the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day… of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey. This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. Celebrating Ireland’s literary greats has always been at the core of Writers’ Tears and there is none greater than James Joyce. The flavor profile presents an upfront combination of honey and apple, followed by vanilla, caramel, and a subtle hint of oak spice.Rich and heavy it has layers of sweeter fruity flavors and darker malty and candy flavors and aromas that balance each other out quite well. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. No, alcohol doesn’t expire. It will last for years as long as you store it in a cool place away from sunlight. In the mouth: Quite a chocolate note on arrival then stone fruit. Plum, peach and then the white grape again. Some citrus zest with mild baking spice, oak tannins and a touch of cask char.

Sadly much like Ireland's Rugby World Cup tournament this whiskey just didn't really work for me. I really struggled to get the chocolate, coconut and fruitiness that you expect to get from Mizunara Oak. Instead this just became a spice driven cask fest that dominated the spirit and detracted from the whole experience. This has been flirting with a 3, so possibly I'm mellowing in my old age. Yet again my dalliances with Travel Retail only result in disappointment. The finish is fairly short but the chocolate note remains along with some cinnamon. The nose is sweet, revealing notes of honey and caramel, accompanied by a touch of malt and a hint of fresh apple.Writers' Tears is an unusual blend for Ireland in that no grain whiskey is used. Instead, this is a blend of triple distilled Single Malt and triple distilled Single Pot Still whiskey, both of which have been sourced from Bushmills and Midleton respectively. The blend is roughly 60% malt and 40% pot still and the grain is unpeated. Supporting the screening of the documentary ‘Remarkable Women’, about the women who influenced the first publication of Ulysses, at MOLI (Museum of Literature Ireland, Dublin). The source of the whiskeys is undisclosed, but there are urban legends stating they come from Jameson. On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils.
