About this deal

The barrel-proof bourbon is aged in new charred oak barrels to develop the sweet caramel, dark chocolate, orange peel, and toasted marshmallows of the bourbon. To that end, I’m tasting ten bourbon whiskeys blind that are at least ten years old. Then, I’m going to rank those bourbons based on taste alone. While ten years is the baseline, there are a couple of bourbons on this list that hit 12 to 16 years too, and I threw on one bourbon that’s a blend of 12 and 16-year-old barrels to see how it stands up. The palate opens with a corn and vanilla blend, which is sweet. It progresses to a light orange and cherry flavor. The heat is composed of a peppery rye spice, which gets nicely blended with the flavors that follow it. It then fades up to the notes of nuts and dark chocolate charred oak. Taste This classic bourbon opens with aromas of caramel, dried cherries, vanilla, corn, roasted nuts, and oak. It also has a slight hint of apple and raisins. This whiskey does give off the scent of ethanol at all. As it goes down your nose, the dark stone fruit smells become more pronounced. You may notice cacao powder notes as well. Overall the nose has everything you would want to have in a bourbon flavor whiskey. Smell B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.

Better than average mouthfeel. Dark bitter chocolate, peanuts, toffee, orange, sweet powdered sugar. Finish However, Heaven Hill Distillery has aged its bourbon for a decade, and critics will agree that it is a perfectly balanced bourbon. As for the rest, there was so little distance between them quality-wise. Another day, another lineup, and any one of these bottles could have ended up on top. But not today.

It has a deep copper-colored complexion and gives the most pleasing look. There is something very impressive about the deep, dark, and vibrant color bourbon, blended with different hues and shades. I loved the look of the bottle too. Nose I have to admit that having had my fair share of New York water over the years, I knew going in that it has a unique quality that would factor into this pour. I was pleased to find that being the case, as well as that it shines as part of the blend. Rather than being a minus in all of the flavor, it contributes some of its own; having heard Lisa speak about how it particularly plays well with the cherry note found in Widow Jane’s bourbons, I’m inclined to agree as it substitutes a dark cloying aspect for a light freshness that sets it apart. The source of the dilution water is from the Widow Jane limestone mine that gives the brand its name. The bitter ginger is balanced nicely by the sweetness of the toffee and caramel flavors. But the problem here is that it might be too sweet. The liquor on its own is very sweet with the flavors within, and adding a bit of sugar in the ginger beer into the drink doesn’t help the situation.

The bourbon is full of peach, cedar, and citrus on the nose. It delivers a rich spice, maple syrup on the palate, with a zesty floral finish. 11. Widow Jane 10-Year Straight Bourbon
