About this deal

So begins one of the twistiest mysteries I’ve read, the plotting is simply superb, to the point that telling you anything specific might well ruin the many many moments where you’ll stop briefly to turn things over in your head. The writing as always is spot on immersive, Tim Weaver has that intuitive, creative ability to character build and set the scene so that you sink into it, every moment a pure joy to read. Tim Weaver said that he decided to write a series about a guy who investigates missing persons in the modern times because he finds it interesting that in this day and age with all kinds of cameras recording everything on every street at all times as well as all day and night news that people still go missing. He also thought that it was interesting how many stories there have to be when someone vanishes. A brilliant, strong start to the story, and great character development. Missing Pieces gets 3 stars from me, which I see as a positive review (see my notes below).

Two and a half years later, with still no answers to the mystery, Cate’s parents hire David to discover what really happened to their daughter and son-in-law. His investigations soon start pointing to another unsolved case from 30 years ago: that of three murdered young women whose bodies were buried in the sand dunes off the Northumbrian coast. I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for an advance copy of Missing Pieces, a stand-alone thriller set, mostly on Crow Island off the coast of New York. I love a good mystery and this book certainly delivers. Told from the first person, David Raker (our investigator). We, the readers are flung into situation that doesn’t make any sense and has no plausible leads to follow up. How/why did Cate and Aiden’s car end up at the bottom of a ravine and where are their bodies? This novel by Tim Weaver is like a jigsaw puzzle. There are so many strands to the plot that must be fitted together to understand what is happening to Rebekah. The story is told from different standpoints and in different time zones. Mostly, it is clear where and when the story is taking place, but at times it was a little confusing. I think the author portrayed Rebekah’s emotional state well as she learned to cope with her situation. I enjoyed his portrayal of this resilient and brave woman.Richard Kite approached private investigator David Raker who has an excellent reputation for locating missing people, however this is an odd case where the missing person is the one seeking the answers. When Raker starts to investigate it leaves him with more questions than answers, who is Richard Kite, why does no one know him and what links him to the body of a woman found beside a London railway line two years ago? I am Missing is the eighth book in Tim Weaver’s David Raker series, showing how cleverly constructed and complex stories can still deliver an excellent story. At times this is a bracing story and you can feel the cold and wet as if you are in the middle of the story, and like all good thrillers the twists happen when you least expect them, and some are surprising. One thing is still clear, it does not matter how far Raker goes, trouble still finds him. The novel is about a man who wakes up bruised, beaten and with no memory of who he is or where he came from, the press immediately dub him 'The Lost Man'. Now ten months later the man who has assumed the name Richard Kite is desperate to find out who he is. Despite police investigations and newspaper appeals the truth remains buried with no one coming forward to help him.

EXCERPT: 'I'm happy to talk,' I said to him, 'but maybe you should just tell me who it is you want me to find first.'The author manipulated the reader with red herrings. What on earth had the historian to do with it all? The annoying brother, too. Briefly - Classic Raker/Weaver so the 4.5/5 is happily rounded up. Loved the ending and laughed aloud...
