Whichever model you go for, though, the features are the same. Both bikes weigh 16kg including the battery (which is impressively light for an ebike, let alone one this cheap) and offer pretty basic features. With fairly high bars putting you in a semi-sporty but still comfortable stance, the VFR makes for a great commuter as it is narrow enough to zip through traffic while ensuring your wrists don’t get too much of a battering. The seat is fairly well padded, pegs nice and low and with the addition of luggage and even heated grips it will happily see off a winter commute. But come the summer months there is so much more to discover with this bike. The Gtech eBike is available in two variants: the Sport model, which I was sent for this review, and the smaller City model, which has a step-through frame. There’s only one size available in each – 20in for the sports and a smaller 17in for the City – so if you’re shorter than around 5ft 10in you’re best off opting for the City model. The motor has a power rating of 250 watts or less Assistance is only provided when the rider is pedalling and assistance is only provided up to a speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) The law also permits a 'walk assistance' mode, where the bike moves with you when walking alongside it. This is limited to 6 km/h (3.7 mph). Being free to ride an e-bike wherever a regular bike can be ridden is an enormous benefit to cyclists, but could be jeopardised by people using higher power or faster e-bikes - particularly if there's an accident. It’s not the sportiest of handling bikes, but it is secure and balanced in the corners and that makes it feel very reassuring. Add to this a 180-mile tank range and unquestionable reliability and it all adds up to a decent machine. And that’s even before you factor in that V4 motor.

If you read a newspaper or watch the news, it's likely that you've heard of cases where lithium ion batteries have caught fire. Whilst lithium ion batteries have an excellent capacity for their weight, the trade-off for this high performance means there are a few risks.The Gtech’s geometry offers no surprises, it’s easy to steer and control at low speeds yet remains stable at higher speeds too. The singlespeed drivetrain means the Gtech cannot easily be pedalled much past its motor cut off point, which I feel might be a little short of the UK’s 15.5mph limit. The power is introduced and exits smoothly, which is more than can be said for some cheaper systems. It’s definitely not the fastest or most powerful of e-bikes though and notable human effort is definitely required to assist the motor with scaling the steepest of inclines. If you're in Northern Ireland, the law is different and you'll need the following to legally ride an e-bike: An ideal first set of wheels, your little one will love speeding off on this bike! This colourful little vehicle transforms from trike into bike mode with ease! Just switch the wheels to change mode and to enhance balance and motor skill development. The battery charger has been specifically designed for use with that particular battery for that particular bike, and is able to communicate with the BMS during charging.
