The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner.

Method 1: Plants usually easily killed using one or two applications of weedkillers containing: mecoprop-P. Examples include Doff LawnWeedkiller, Westland Resolva Lawn Weedkiller Extra or Miracle-Gro EverGreen Complete 4 in 1 (also contains fertiliser and mosskiller).Flowers: The bright yellow flowers (which can fade to white) are between 20 mm – 30 mm in diameter, with 8 – 12 narrowly oval petals. Each plant can produce several flowers borne on long stalks. The flowering period is generally between March and May. Vitax Lawn Clear Concentrate works by killing the weeds other weedkillers will leave behind. It is a fast acting and powerful product that controls hard and difficult to treat weeds such as dandelions, daisies, buttercups and clover but should not be used on lawns less than a year old.

Lesser celandine is also a difficult weed to eradicate using chemicals, as it is resistant to most selective herbicides. Lesser celandine is one of the first weeds to appear in the growing season, before it disappears again by mid May. This weed grows from small, swollen root tubers and it spreads via by tubercles (bulbils (small swollen buds)). The root tubers enable this plant to survive the winter months.
