About this deal

Hands-On Approach: Parodied and exploited. Because they're all now hypermasculine, the Kens cannot resist a Barbie who's ignorant about sports, so the Barbies plan to use this as a distraction — Barbies who have freed from their Kendom indoctrination ask for help with sports so the Kens will cuddle up to them to demonstrate, and only for another Barbie to be taken and deprogrammed while the Kens aren't looking. We then get a montage of this happening with different Ken/Barbie pairs for different activities, culminating in a crowd shot of the Kens dressed for various sports proudly proclaiming "Let us show you". Midge is a character passed over as too weird because she's a pregnant doll. Her costuming, and this narrative haste to ignore her, are a reference to the controversial " Happy Family Midge " doll, infamous for depicting a pregnant Barbie with a removable belly to let her "give birth" to the baby stored inside.

This film was released in the spring, breaking the one-film-per-year autumn/fall release cycle of the previous films. Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase". Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. 20 July 2016. Archived from the original on 17 May 2022 . Retrieved 24 May 2022. Political Overcorrectness: Sasha gives such statements occasionally, such as calling Barbie a "nutjob" before correcting herself to "reality-challenged". When Barbie first meets her, Sasha tears into her for being a representation of capitalism and sexism and caps it off by calling her a fascist. Barbie is reduced to tears and confusion about how she could possibly be a fascist, as she doesn't do things like "control the flow of commerce". Later, her bumbling dad's attempt to speak Spanish only results in her complaining he just appropriated a political slogan. This 42nd and latest film entry stars Barbie's younger sister, Skipper, a touted babysitting expert, as she takes a summer job at a water park and tries out different first jobs with some new friends when her babysitting business hits a snag. She uses babysitting skills to save a nearly-collapsed birthday party at the park. The success renews Skipper's confidence in her babysitting business and she and her new friends start a babysitting squad. [67] See also [ edit ]Barbie Epic Road Trip". Netflix. 5 October 2022. In 2007, Mainframe was acquired by local post-production company, Rainmaker Income Fund, rebranding it as Rainmaker Animation initially and then Rainmaker Entertainment the following year. The films during this period were originally distributed on VHS and DVD by Artisan Entertainment and Family Home Entertainment from 2001 until 2004, when both were acquired by and folded into Lionsgate. In 2006, Mattel ceased distribution of the films on VHS and focused solely on DVD; at the same time, Universal (which already held their foreign distribution rights) took over the domestic distribution rights, after negotiations with Lionsgate broke down over the low amount offered by Mattel to continue distributing future Barbie films. [15] Lionsgate was permitted to continue distribution of the titles released by them up to The Barbie Diaries for several years after; these rights eventually reverted to Mattel, who then authorized Universal to begin reissuing these titles. Since 2001, Barbie, a fashion doll manufactured by American toy and entertainment company Mattel, has starred or featured in 42 CGI or computer-animated feature films and streaming television films which since then has become a core component of an eponymous media franchise. Fantasy Landmark Equivalent: At the beginning of the film, there's a cutaway gag where Stereotypical Barbie drives through an equivalent of Mount Rushmore in Barbieland that depicts the very first Barbie, Christie, Kira, and Teresa dolls. When Beach Ken brings the patriarchy ideology to Barbieland, the dolls' faces are replaced by that of horses, due to Beach Ken thinking horses are a defining symbol of masculinity.

Mattel would retire the Mattel Playground Productions banner in mid-2016 in favor of their then-new banner, Mattel Creations, which it created on 31 March that year. On 25 October 2016, Rainmaker Entertainment acquired and merged with Frederator Studios and Erzin-Hirsh Entertainment into a new holding company known as WOW! Unlimited Media, LLC and rebranded as Rainmaker Studios. Arc Productions animated the other 2 of their 4 contracted films and was poised to add a 5th to their portfolio, but could only do pre-production on that 5th entry; Arc subsequently began to suffer from financial issues in the summer of 2016, then filed for bankruptcy weeks later. [46] [47] [48] The 5th entry, titled Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase, would be brought over to Rainmaker Entertainment for completion. It's also not the first time we see Will Ferrell as the ( ultimately misguided) Big Bad of a film based off toys. When the Kens take over Barbieland and turn it to the Kendom, the Barbies start acting like Stepford wives in all but name. Broken Aesop: It's Played for Laughs, but for all the movie's discourse about the harms of patriarchy and hierarchy to people of any gender, Barbieland ultimately "advances" to a "reformed matriarchy" where Kens are no longer fully excluded from politics, but they still only have it about as good as women do in the real world. The narrator's tone when she describes it makes it clear she's well aware this trope is in play. Department of Redundancy Department: After taking over Barbieland and renaming it the "Kendom", Beach Ken renames Stereotypical Barbie's dreamhouse "Ken's Mojo Dojo Casa House". Sasha points out that "Dojo", "Casa" and "House" all mean the same thing.

On her birthday, Princess Annika worries her parents by going outside to ice skate without permission and bringing home a "possibly dangerous" polar bear cub named Shiver. As a result, the overprotective King and Queen forbid her from going skating ever again. Based on the 1844 French tale The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, this 16th film entry and the first to depict the original debut Barbie wordmark logo stars Barbie as Corinne, a brave girl who longs to become a fighter and protect the French royal family just as her father has. Corinne is disappointed to discover girls are not allowed to be musketeers. Instead, Corinne and three scullery maids, Viveca, Aramina, and Renee all share the same desire to fight as musketeers and defend the royal family. All four are trained in secret by a swordmaster and soon put their talent to work to save Prince Louis, who has a hidden affection for Corrine. Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Allan spends most of the film being a superfluous hanger-on with no real purpose or identity. When the Kens try to stop Gloria and Sasha from leaving Barbieland, however, he comes out swinging and singlehandedly defeats an entire construction crew to secure their escape. a b Adams, Timothy (21 October 2022). Following the original release of this film, Mattel ceased future Barbie film releases on VHS, as the format was gradually deprecating in market share and worldwide popularity at the time.Mattel is presented as a soulless corporation, with its top brass being all men, its workers in grey cubicles, and an elevator with a button that literally goes all the way up. Richardson, Greg (2005-09-30), Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (Animation, Family, Romance), Mainframe Entertainment, Mattel, Voice Box Productions , retrieved 2022-07-23 As part of the plan to un-brainwash the Barbies in the Kendom, President Barbie sits down with a Ken who's watching The Godfather and puts on a ditzy act that she's never seen it, to which he jumps at the chance to explain its brilliance in an attempt to impress her; he calls it "a rich blend of Coppola's aesthetic genius and a triumph for Robert Evans and the architecture of the '70s studio system".
