Man erkennt schnell, dass in Cawthons schauerlichem, innovativem Horror durchaus reizvolle Möglichkeiten angelegt sind, über die bloße Gruselunterhaltung hinaus auch einige tiefsinnigere Gedanken zu transportieren. Fakt aber ist, aus dieser wertvollen Anlage macht der Autor über die oben genannten Ansätze hinausgehend so gut wie nichts. Die Handlung bewegt sich allein auf einer ganz konkreten Ebene, weitestgehend frei von Mehrdeutigkeiten, Andeutungen oder Geheimnissen. Anders als die Spielreihe bietet somit der Roman kaum die Lust am eigenständigen Erarbeiten dessen, was die unheilvolle Vergangenheit von Freddy Fazbear's ausmacht oder hinter den Ereignissen der Gegenwart steht.
