About this deal

The charismatic Prince sweeps through Scotland calling men to arms as he goes, and Robbie joins them. At Culloden the Scots are overwhelmed by the English, and Robbie runs for his life from the field of battle.

Robbie McLeod has the misfortune to be orphaned at a very young age and is brought up for a while by his heartless uncle. He is also born into a difficult age, being young and idealistic, in Scotland, at the time of the Jacobite Uprising in 1745. Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.”

As soon as he was old enough, he ran away from his uncle's farm and spent years on the run, stealing to feed himself. Inside, Robbie knew that the life of an itinerant petty thief was not for him, but he saw no way of extricating himself from that downward spiral. The last time Robbie saw Charlie, Charlie had also started a family of his own.Michael Morpurgo discovered his talent for writing while working as a teacher. “We had to read the children a story every day and my lot were bored by the book I was reading. I could see there was magic in it for them, and realised there was magic in it for me.” He joined the army and enjoyed meeting new friends, but hated being shouted at. So, he left the army and started university at King’s College in London. In the story, their great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Robbie McLeod, talks about his childhood.
