Even though it is a difficult review, as there are a number of different teams working on short stories throughout the book, all the stories were pretty similar. Most concentrated on Superman's humanity rather than his powers, or Superman's life lessons from his parents, the Kents. The other standout story for me was a more imaginative one dealing with a world without color and S uperman being the one to return color to the Earth, knowing that there are pros and cons to colors and the emotions associated with them in our world. Another obvious and heavy-handed afterschool special set on a playground. Or maybe it would be more at home on the corny old Superfriends TV show. In the more recent version of the Superman Red/Superman Blue storyline, which began in 1998, Clark is temporarily deprived of the solar energy he needs for his powers. When he attempts to recharge his solar powered cells, he accidentally gives himself a totally different set of electrical powers that can only be used when he transforms.

I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the first issue, it just didn't put Superman in a situation that I would want him to be in. I'm okay with such a scenario but I don't want it for Superman and I was surprised that it was the story to start Red and Blue. While Scott Snyder mega-fans can put forth a compelling argument that all of his prior work from Batmanto Swamp Thinginforms story points and themes explored within Dark Nights: Metal,not to mention the collected work of Grant Morrison, the 2017 Dark Nights: Metal event was designed to be enjoyed on its own. The “Metal” in the title, in addition to referring to actual special metals explored within the story, is meant to invoke the imagery of a classic heavy metal album. I’d suggest letting the sights and concepts wash over you and jumping feet-first into the deep end.
