About this deal

The recipe was handed down to me by a trusted preschool teacher years ago, and it can’t be beat. I’m so confident about this recipe, in fact, that I included copy in my best-selling book, Tinkerlab: A Hands-on Guide for Little Inventors. Does mixing play dough colors make you cringe? If you’ve known me for a while, you know my love for play dough runs very deep, and obviously my love for rainbows too. So now imagine homemade play dough + rainbows! I’m screaming with excitement! (On the inside) Won’t let it out because people will actually think I’m insane. I personally think it’s insanity if you aren’t obsessed with rainbow play dough after watching this, but that’s just me, and I might just be a bit biased about rainbows and play dough! Food coloring or liquid watercolors. I’m a fan Sax Concentrated Liquid Watercolors and Wilton Icing Colors, which make gorgeous shades of play dough to match any occasion, mood, or toddler request. It’s interesting to think that a product that started off as a popular wallpaper cleaner has become one of history’s most iconic toys. My three-year-old niece was recently introduced to Play-Doh and is now realizing all of the good, clean fun she can have with some wonderful smelling, colorful and soft, salty dough. Similarly, get out the cookie / ice cream scoop and a muffin tin for a cupcake shop. Don’t forget the candles! Knead the warm dough until it’s smooth and then divide it into the number of colors that you’d like to make. I divided mine into four balls, flattened each of them, added a little bit of food coloring or liquid watercolors, and then kneaded it in. I added more food coloring to get the desired shades of yellow, pink, teal, and lavender. If you don’t want paint-stained hands, you could wear gloves for this step.

You can of course make your own rainbow playdough, just follow a normal playdough recipe like our one for lavender playdough but change the ingredients slightly so that instead of adding lavender you add a few drops of food coloring instead.
