About this deal

How good are you at music? You may know what kind of music you like to listen to but are you able to guess music questions correctly to be named PopMaster Champion! This game is based on Ken Bruce’s popular BBC Radio 2 show since February 1998. This is the official board game version by Ginger Fox, for ages 14 and onwards and for two players or more. If you have more than four players, you can play as teams instead. This is a great family game for older children to adults. Even though Mr K is 14 years old, he does not have a great knowledge of music so finds many of the questions quite difficult.

In the radio show, two contestants are asked ten questions based on popular music. The third, sixth and ninth “bonus” questions are on a topic chosen by the contestant, from two options offered by the host prior to the start of the quiz. The winning contestant will take part in the 3 in 10. Scan the QR code on the 3-in-10 question card with a smart device, grab a pen and pencil, and write down your 3 answers out of the 10 given before the time runs out!Channel 4's head of features and daytime Jo Street said bringing PopMaster to the TV was her "mission in life". The player who gets the most correct answers in the 3-in-10 question wins and is crowned POPMASTER! Press the digital winner’s button to hear a message from Ken himself! Setting up is simple. The board should be placed in the middle of the table within reach of all the players. Each player chooses a playing piece and a set of A, B, C answer tokens. I do find the colours on the playing pieces confusing, especially the light and dark purple. I wish that they had chosen a different colour palette rather than trying to match the game’s colour theme. The light and dark purple playing pieces are too similar. It will be hard for players with colour blindness or other visual impairments to distinguish between them. Each player is dealt 2 bonus question cards and asks the player to their left to choose which of the two categories they want as their bonus round questions. Set up the game board, give each player a set of answer tokens and place the playing pieces on the board. Shuffle the question cards and place them on the table.

Once you have played all 10 rounds, the two players with the highest score go through to the final round. The iconic 3-in-10 question from Ken Bruce himself! He added: "I can't wait to get started - and find out whether I might have a face for TV after all!" The formats are the same as the radio show. It consists of two rounds. For round 1, players start with a series of 10 questions, alternating between bonus questions. Players take turns to read out the bonus question from their card to the player on their right. After the 10 questions, the 2 players closest to the top of the board go through to the next round. For round 2, the 3-in-10 head-to-head final round is hosted by Ken Bruce!

Games

Battle it out in the multiple-choice questions by answering questions from across the decades. Earn more points in the bonus rounds and see if you have what it takes to make it to the final round where Ken himself will ask you the 3-in-10 question. Bruce said he is looking forward to "challenging music lovers from around the country... under the glare of studio lights and with the added pressure of television cameras". When Bruce announced in January he would be leaving the BBC after 45 years at the corporation, the presenter stressed it was his own choice, saying "some new opportunities have come up and I would like to continue my career in a slightly different way in the next few years".
