The programming is easy and the software is useful. I was able to create profiles for each of the games I tested, though the automatic profile switching did glitch out once or twice and fail to switch. I found two gripes with the system, one of which may or may not be fixable via software at some point. The first is that it's sort of a pain to hit the top button. You need to move your finger up and over the mouse wheel to hit it. In the midst of a heavy firefight, this isn't exactly ideal. I'm used to having the tip of my middle finger on top of the mouse wheel at all times, and having to shift my entire hand forward to reach the button is a little awkward. Material is PTFE. Out of the box these are smooth and you will not need replacement, however judging by the experience with old MX 518 these will fail after 3-5 years and you will either replace them with better after market solution or simply continue without them. From a gaming point of view, the 1600dpi sensor found in the MX518 will be a real draw for anyone wanting to improve their frag count. Now I didn’t realise just how clumsy the movement on my basic mouse was until I started using the MX518. Playing my game of choice, Counter Strike: Source, I found that I could zero in on targets from a distance far more easily. This was obviously due to the face that I could move my crosshair with greater sensitivity and ultimately grab more of those kudos enhancing headshots.

It's these "other" buttons that set the mouse apart from its brethren. On most of the Logitech MX mice, these are the Cruise Control buttons, designed to let you scroll through applications and whatnot differently than the mouse wheel. Side buttons are better than in old MX 518, but their position is not perfect and some other mice have them more upward which seems to be better solution. While it's not overburdened with a ton of excess features (that would've surely ballooned the price if not the weight and size of the unit), the MX518 does come with some thoughtful conveniences to streamline your experience. It's got onboard storage for up to five profiles, so if you're sharing it with other people who prefer different settings it's a cinch to switch between them, and it'll remember your preferences if you move to a different device. Adjustable DPI: Choose your preferred sensitivity on the fly with easily accessible DPI buttons, allowing for precise targeting or speedy maneuvers.

Pros and Cons

Wireless keyboards and mice have become more popular than ever, partly because the prices have dropped considerably, but also because they are far more reliable than they used to be. However, for me, a wireless mouse is just not good enough for gaming – I can always feel a slight lag when playing with a wireless mouse, and once again, this could be the difference between living and dying; or more importantly, gloating or sulking. Not surprisingly, the MX518 Legendary feels like a mouse from an earlier era. It eschews the sharp angles and straight lines found on mice like Logitech’s own G502, and instead opts for graceful curves and rounded edges. The left and right buttons blend seamlessly with the palm rest in a single glossy shell, and the rubber finish on the mouse wheel is smooth rather than grooved, which definitely feels old school. The DPI up and down buttons are placed above and below the mouse wheel, which is convenient and easier than having just one button to cycle through presets when you need to make an adjustment. There’s also a profile cycle button to switch between the mouse’s five onboard profiles. It’s 131 mm in length, 70 mm in width and 44 mm in height. Weight around 100 grams. That makes it 10 grams less than the original MX 518 and those 10 grams can be felt in daily usage. not constantly replace batteries, or worry if a distracting power warning, or signal aberration is about to interfere with my gaming in a clutch spot. But the MX518 isn’t just about ultimate sensitivity, it’s also about flexibility. Using the bundled Logitech application, you can pre-program five different sensitivity settings and switch between them at the touch of a button, while you’re playing your game. Located just above and below the scroll wheel are plus and minus buttons – these will switch up and down between your customised sensitivity settings. With this in game adjustment, you can work out what the best sensitivity is for each weapon in your arsenal, giving you that extra edge.

By default and in-hardware, there are three switchable resolutions available: 1,600dpi, 800dpi and 400dpi. If you install Logitech's SetPoint software you can adjust these settings with up to five resolution points, anywhere from 1,600dpi down to 400dpi, in 50dpi steps. You can set up to five, but as little as one if you wanted to. If you want the mouse to solely act like a 550dpi mouse, you can do that.
