The main game isn't bad necessarily, but it is different and that sours the experience. The mini games are the biggest casualty for me. Again, maybe they aren't technically bad, but so many of my favorites are just not the same game. Monkey target: launch is just glitchy feeling, you can't gain momentum the same way by going up and down, etc. Monkey Fight: movement is slow and stiff, no more flying high and landing, you're just dead when you go off. Monkey Baseball: I don't remember specifics as well, but I don't remember so many infield hits that went uncaught that became outs. Monkey Race: the physics just change everything about how it feels to play. Monkey Soccer just feels clunky. Monkey Billiards is the only one I've done that isn't worse that I can tell.

And if the 100 new stages are not enough to challenge your Monkey Ball mastery, you can take on Challenge Mode and see if having a limited number of lives is enough to curb your hubris. Instead of just controlling a monkey moving through mazes, Banana Blitz introduced a jump mechanic that was designed to circumvent some of the game’s obstacles. However, the game’s physics engine would mean that some jumps would be a lot more risky than others, leading to a lot of unfair bounces off the map, especially with the game’s motion controls. Also, the game introduced some terrible boss battles that just didn’t mesh well with SMB’s regular gameplay.This lets the monkeys move around to collect bananas, find treasure, and reach the exit in classic Super Monkey Ball fashion.

Sadly many of these concepts are not executed so well, as the Wii Remote controller feels a bit intuitive here, forcing players to twist their wrist to tilt the world.

While these sound like good innovations that would help Super Monkey Ball evolve as it moved through the early 2010s, Banana Splitz nearly killed the SMB series as we know it. Reviewers weren’t too kind to the motion controls and level editors, while woeful sales for both this game and the PS Vita in general has meant that there’s been no new traditional Super Monkey Ball game ever since. Unfortunately, Step & Roll’s controls left a lot to be desired for many players, as some found the controls to be incredibly imprecise, while others hated the stage design that promised innovation but actually delivered levels with ideas you’ve seen before in previous Super Monkey Ball games. Conceived by Amusement Vision head Toshihiro Nagoshi, Super Monkey Ball involves guiding a transparent ball containing one of four monkeys—AiAi, MeeMee, Baby, and GonGon—across a series of maze-like platforms. The player must reach the goal without falling off or letting the timer reach zero to advance to the next stage. There are also several multiplayer modes: independent minigames as well as extensions of the main single-player game. Characters from the Super Monkey Ball series have been featured in other Sega titles. AiAi has appeared as a playable character in Sonic Riders and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, while both AiAi and MeeMee make playable appearances in Sega Superstars Tennis and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. AiAi was also featured in Archie Comics' adaptation of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in issue #45 of Sonic Universe.

If it wasn’t for the fact that the N-Gage is all but forgotten, it would probably be at the bottom of this list. Adventure likely did more reputational damage than this footnote in Super Monkey Ball’s history. While the control scheme works great, the higher difficulty level of some stages makes the whole experience feel very frustrating. Many of these stages come with a strict time limit and complex designs that make it difficult to recover from a mistake.
