About this deal

I have yet to learn of anyone who managed to get an allocated bottle by complaining about it on the internet, though feel free to correct me in the comments section if this has been a fruitful strategy for you. In addition to being ineffective, this kvetching comes across as unpleasant and churlish and, yes, entitled. Michter’s has set a high bar for itself, and for the most discerning fans, this particular finished rye might just barely clear it. Andrea: I feel quite strongly about this release because what I think is beautiful about it is it has this beautiful floral and blossom honey nose and this beautiful citrus that comes in and also this chocolate note. What’s really interesting is when I start tasting this it comes into my palate a little bit sweet and as it moves across my palate it transitions into some of the fruit character; I even get a bit of raisin with spice that reminds me of a holiday fruit pie. High West is a great example of distillery that built itself up via sourced whiskey, but always sought to make that whiskey their own by transforming it in some way before it was released to the public. The classic Double Rye! is just what it sounds like—two different rye whiskeys, blended together. On the older end, you have well-aged MGP 95/5 rye with a 7 year age statement, but then High West is also chipping in their own house-distilled young rye, which has the added unique factor of being made with 20% malted rye.

However, while many people tend to focus on their finished products or indeed their barrel strength offerings, I’ve always been one for their beguiling 10-year age stated expressions. Michter’s 10 Year bourbon in particular was always one I felt was misprized in the wider American whiskey landscape, and so I was among those saddened to hear that it wouldn’t be seeing a release in 2022. Fortunately for us whiskey enthusiasts we didn’t have to go without its rye-based brother this year, and so I’m happy to be reviewing the 2022 Michter’s 10 Year Single Barrel Rye today. Whereas the bourbon was an overwhelming tour de force, I felt like I had to work very hard to get much out of this rye, and not in a good way. I appreciate a subtle whiskey, and this is definitely subtle. However, there are parts where it feels as though the rye wants for something to say for itself. There are no flaws, just lulls in the conversation. NOSE: Rich and enticing. Butterscotch, dry wood, spicy rye notes with bits of creamy vanilla and a hint of something fruity. Big, bold and just lovely. Malt: When selecting barrels, is there a particular flavor profile the tasting panel is looking for? Is the aim for this product’s profile to be uniform year over year?

6. Bomberger’s Declaration 2022 Edition

It’s one of the more interesting, “sip-so-I-can-learn-more” finishes from the Michter’s toasted barrel series. I can’t help but think the drying spice on the finish would make this an excellent rye whiskey to pair with dessert. Malt: There are rumors, of course, that there is whiskey older than 10 years in this expression. Care to comment?

Michter’s Straight Rye is just an ok rye whiskey. Kinda wish I didn’t buy a whole bottle to be honest. Even though it’s cheap it’s not going to be something I immediately reach for when I get home so it’s going to sit for a bit unfortunately till we do another rye event at the whiskey clubs. The Michter’s Rye is made from select American rye grain that is sheared to maximize flavour extraction from the grain. It’s one of the more interesting, “sip-so-I-can-learn-more” finishes from the Michter’s toasted barrel series. I can’t help but think the drying spice on the finish would make this an excellent rye whiskey to pair with dessert. Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish Rye Score Andrea: [laughs] We don’t publicize what those ages are, but I will tell you that it is over 10, and I think it’s part of the joy of the experience to be honest. You know it’s fun to have people dial into their palate and kind of talk about what they’re experiencing and what they think it represents and I think that’s a very interesting conversation to engage around the drinking of a pour. Palate: That fruit becomes more dried and almost salted on the palate while bourbon vanilla and mild caramel sweetness mingle with cinnamon and nutmeg.

It’s sweet, complex and has an oily mouthfeel that I would not have suspected. Since the proof is so low, there is no distracting heat to chase away new drinkers either. It’s really the perfect beginner’s rye whiskey that can also satisfy a well-versed rye whiskey drinker too. Final Thoughts

After changing hands many times during the subsequent years, it landed up in the hands of Louis Forman, who co-owned the distillery with Charles Everett Beam. Louis created the Michter’s brand name by combining his sons’ names, Michael and Peter. ModernThirst has compiled one of the most comprehensive compilations of bourbon and whiskey mash bill recipes on the net. Enjoy! ModernThirst Bourbon and Whiskey Mash Bills Table *= Estimated percentageMichter’s Single Barrel Rye whiskey has a mash bill of at least 51% rye and includes some corn and malted barley. It is a NAS release.
Other releases from this brand include the Michter’s Sour Mash whiskey and the Michter’s bourbon. Generally speaking, when you see a whiskey labeled as “blended whiskey” or just “bourbon” (instead of “straight bourbon”), it’s a blend of whiskey with neutral grain spirits to help keep costs down and profits high. This expression is labeled as “Unblended,” specifically because it’s made with whiskey only (no grain spirits added). The whiskey in these bottles was aged in barrels that are “whiskey-soaked.” Once the whiskey is just right, it’s then blended and small-batch bottled. As Michter’s continues to face inventory constraints due to strong demand, the company is taking steps to expand capacity responsibly.” Returning at last to my question of how this compares to other recent releases: I’d have to say the 2022 Michter’s 10 Year Single Barrel Rye succeeds in being more well rounded, but falls short of being exceptional in any one category. That fact, when considered along with its steep asking price, will keep it a notch below “Great” for me on the Malt scale. Score: 5/10 Michter’s 10 Year Old Single Barrel Rye 2022 – Taylor’s Review Every Michter’s Rye is from a single barrel, so there might be taste differences between the different bottlings. I have a bottle from barrel 16F471.

Malt: I know that for Michter’s you have a proprietary filtration process that is unique for each expression. Can you talk about what sets the process for filtering Michter’s 10 Year Single Barrel Rye apart from, say, your standard rye? Still, a bottle like this will have limitations, but it should be a fairly easy-sipping introduction to rye whiskey for people who do not yet like that style of whiskey. So what did I think about it? Let’s find out. I sampled this neat from a glencairn. The release then goes on to detail the specific investments being made, including additional fermentation tanks, expanded bottling operations, and the running of the company’s Shively plant 24/7. However, the echoes of flummoxed fans’ protestations are audible elsewhere in the release, such as in this passage: However, while Michter’s normally has a deft hand at finishing times, I worry the toasted barrel may have had too much influence to make this the same kind of crowd pleaser as some of the brand’s previous limited-release ryes. It’s certainly an enjoyable pour that I’d have a hard time turning down under most circumstances. We recognize the frustration of some of our supporters as they encounter challenges in finding certain Michter’s releases on the shelf. We want our loyal Michter’s drinkers to know we are trying to continue to invest in the growth of the brand while maintaining the exceptional level of our whiskeys,’ commented Andrea Wilson, Michter’s Master of Maturation.”

Nose: I can tell instantly that the corn in the mash bill has positively impacted the sweetness throughout. Sweet spoonbread with a hint of maple fills my nostrils. Or is it more like a Kettle Corn? Let’s just say it’s both. Anyway, it mixes with a healthy amount of oak and vanilla. I thought this would smell much younger than it actually ends up being. It is also much more aromatic than I was anticipating. There is an almost potpourri aspect to it. Wow, what a nose!
