JC: This book is about three women told from the perspective of three women, and each of them are admirable and brilliant, and strong, and kind and caring and wonderful. And they have all these great qualities and are able to assert themselves in their lives in so many ways. But when it comes to the men that they love, they just are not able to, to do that. And they’re not able to stand up for themselves. And so that really is kind of the theme of the book, which is why as women do we We struggle so often to be our truest self and our relationship where we really should. B&N: Regardless of which city you’re talking about, if you’ve had that experience living in a big city, you can relate to the you know, like you want to be there, you want to be where the things are happening. But you probably have to have roommates to probably are sacrificing a little bit to get there. Yeah, exactly. So Joy had a conversation or with her mom, or she was just reflecting on her mom, you know, in her 30s, she had a house, she had a family, she had a good job, she had a home. And that’s not necessarily the reality for a lot of people right now. Right? There’s that pressure to kind of do that.

B&N: So, I know you have a new baby at all. But have you read anything recently? Like anything new that was really stood out to you? B&N: You’ve got an MFA from Emerson College and an MST which I had to look up. I was like Master of Studies, which is essentially a Master of Arts from Oxford?Joy and Annie had become roommates even though they were also good friends, a risky decision that in most contexts could be cataclysmic, but as it was they bought a couch split fifty-fifty and although he was Annie’s cat, Joy would feed Simon in the mornings and Annie would feed him at night. They rented a three-bedroom in the trendy part of town with the hope that they’d keep the spare bedroom as a guest room.

JC: I know. It’s so true. So mortifying, it’s kind of still like that, you know, it’s the exact same feeling when people say to you, like you meet someone on the street, and they like, ask you what you do for a living, which is like the worst thing to be like, I’m a writer, you never know what people are thinking. They’re like, Sure you are. I always think they think that if they ask you the title of your book, it doesn’t matter what the title of your book is. They always have the same reaction, which is like, confusion, a little distaste of it. Like they’re just kind of like what? Like, because it’s just not you know it. It taught me when we were naming my son, not to tell anyone our ideas. We didn’t say a word to anyone, not even my parents. We told no one when he was born and was there, because people just don’t know how to react to a name. You know, judgment. Yeah, yeah. So it’s exact same feeling as when you’re a kid. So my advice to anyone out there is if you ever find a writer and you ask them to name their book, I don’t care what it is. You say. That’s fantastic. What a great title, that would like really help. B&N: It kind of seems like for for Celine, a lot of her decisions in life had been based on the validation she’s received. You know, she’s the one that we get, like the most of her history with the current boyfriends and kind of who she actually liked. And then the experiences that kind of just happened and she just went with it. And even with Theo, I think it was kind of like, you know, they had this connection. Maybe. He was a nice enough guy. HOW TO FALL OUT OF LOVE MADLY is told from the perspective of Joy, Annie and Celine- millennial women working and living in a city trying their best to hit their fantom life goals that was pressed on them by society. Joy and Annie are friends and roommates living together but still aren’t able to cover their rent even though they hold down steady jobs that they enjoy doing. In an attempt to keep their rental, they decide to get third roommate and in walks Theo who charms them and becomes a part of their home life. After months of hinting Annie’s boyfriend finally ask her to move in so the trio now becomes a duo, but Joy doesn’t mind because now she’s got Theo to herself.

Joy was put on birth control at thirteen years old by her doctor, who was a man. He was old and had been her doctor since she was a baby. When her mother had told him in private that her daughter had very painful, heavy periods, he suggested it, and without question they put her on a small dose of hormones. From the age of thirteen until now, at nearly thirty years old, Joy had not ovulated. I am a Jana Casale superfan. ... How to Fall Out of Love Madly astounds with its insights about love and the search for meaning and self-acceptance. Everyone who loves Sally Rooney should be reading Jana Casale!”

Joy and Annie are friends and roommates whose thirty-something lives aren't exactly what they'd imagined. To make ends meet, they decide to rent their extra bedroom to Theo, who charms Joy with his salt-and-pepper hair and adoration of their one-eyed cat. When Annie goes to live with her boyfriend, Theo and Joy settle into a comfortable domesticity. Then Theo brings home Celine, the girlfriend he's never mentioned, who is possibly the most stunning woman Joy has ever seen. Joy resolves to do whatever it takes to hold on to him, falling ever deeper into an emotional hellscape of her own making. She is too obsessed to realize that Celine's beauty doesn't protect her from pain. Haunted by an event from her past, Celine can't escape her shame and finds herself in an endless cycle of self-sabotage. JC: I kind of did. I wanted to be a writer from the time I was like, 10 years old, I had a fourth grade teacher. I mean, you know how it is like, your elementary school teachers are so fundamental, and finding yourself, you know, it’s like, it’s almost like ridiculous how much power they have over you good and bad, you know. So that’s why having a great teacher can mean so much. I have this great fourth grade teacher. And he had this assignment where we all like wrote into these journals in class. And you could write whatever you want your great stories, you could write about your stuff, whatever. And then he would go when we were at recess and kind of look through the book, you come in from recess, and they’d be up on the overhead projector. I don’t know if the kids have those anywhere. Probably not. Maybe they do. Maybe I’m wrong, sometimes dinosaur things last forever. It’ll be up there. And usually it was up there as like a critique. I came in and my story was up there. And I like died inside. I felt horrible. Like, I was so worried about what people, you know, I just thought, usually he would talk about grammar and spelling out of it. But he had everybody read it. And he’s like, what, tell me what you think of it. And like the kids were all like, there’s this as misspelled. There should be this. And, and he was like, isn’t this beautiful? Like, something like that? He said, and that literally changed my life, you know, and he completely fostered my interest as being a writer. He just basically told me that I was talented at it, which is so important when you’re a kid. So yeah, that that moment is like defined my entire life, obviously. But no, I wanted it from then on. And I just kept going. Annie was silent for a moment as she reread the post. “Let’s make a pact that no matter who moves in here, this is still our home and we’re not going to be pushed out by them,” she said. “I don’t want things to change just because someone new comes in.”All of the men in this book were completely terrible people. It got to the point they were almost unbelievable; I would often be taken out of the story thinking, "ok, this would never actually happen." I'm too lazy to go through the entire book to find the exact quote, but I remember the book saying something like "there are very few good men in the world which is why so many women settle for less than their worth." One of the other secondary characters is also married to a man who, according to one of the women narrators, isn't funny or particularly interesting. Though the wife seems to be perfectly happy, all the narrator does is judge and berate her (not the husband) for the marriage because she thinks that her friend has "settled". Three relatable thirtysomethings drive thisode to womanhood. Learning the hard way to love themselves, the women teach invaluable lessons.” — People

words. There was just her heart. The sound of her heart to herself sound she'd heard so many times, a sound she barely ever listened to. And then there was nothing at all.” B&N: Yes. It's impossible to know whether you'll fall back in love until you give it a try

This whole novel resonated with me. I think it will resonate with many women. I felt for Joy, a self conscious and chronic people pleaser, in love with a man who was only too happy to use her for an emotional relationship while having a sexual relationship with another. I felt for Annie, finding out that the boss who has always been kind to her has been preying on women at the office, while dating a man who is never supportive when she needs him. I felt for Celine, praised for her beauty and overlooked for any other qualities, dating the ‘nice’ man because she feels it’s the right thing to do. I understood the way Annie and Joy were able to see what would be the best thing for one another and to recognize unhealthy patterns in the other, but not be able to do the same thing for themselves. Cash-strapped Joy and Annie decide to rent their apartment's extra bedroom to charming, older Theo, and Joy and Theo get kind of snuggly close when Annie then decides to move in with her boyfriend. Soon, however, Theo brings in Celine, the gorgeous girlfriend he's neglected to mention, and jealous Joy fails to recognize Celine's own deep pain. Following the attention-getting debut The Girl Who Never Read Noam Chomsky. Library Journal And that moment I think about all the time. I’ll hear her voice as I wait at a stoplight or even when I pee. B&N: Yes, that’s no teachers. Yes, shout out to teachers. That’s a very relatable, deep memory about having your story shared in front of the class. And the level of embarrassment that I’m like, I don’t know if they’re trying to do this, but they do. Joy and Annie are friends and roommate but still unable to cover their rent, they get third roommate and in walks Theo who charms them. After months of hinting Annie’s boyfriend finally ask her to move in so the trio now becomes a duo, but Joy doesn’t mind because now she’s got Theo to herself. They spend a lot of time together and Joy ends up falling for him, only for him to show up a few weeks later with a girlfriend. Joy is confused but figures if she puts her best foot forward he will miraculously fall for her. Meanwhile, Theo's girlfriend Celine has been told all her life she is stunning but doesn’t really believe it. When Annie moves in with her boyfriend, she thinks this is what she wants but finds herself putting on this “easy breezy cool girlfriend” act that she may not be able to keep up. She wants commitment, but does she want it from her boyfriend?
