The lines between simulation and emulation blur a bit these days. You are now able to run Cisco VIRL images which are images of real Cisco operating system images which run on standardized virtual hardware. GNS3 emulates the hardware that VIRL images require to run GNS3 will prompt you for the Name and Location of your new project.The default name is untitled and default location C:\Users\\GNS3 in Windows: The buttons themselves are pretty self-explanatory, but you will notice both in the Workspace and Topology Summary panes that the indicators will change color for devices that are running, suspended, or stopped (restarted devices switch to Started, and you’ll see them reload in any open console connection).
