About this deal

We are aware that some toothpaste is labelled as ‘non-mint’, but does still contain mint alongside the main flavour that is listed. In this situation, mint is not always listed in the ingredients. I tried the vanilla flavour. The flavour was sweet and mild and did not last after spitting out the excess. It is a solid white crème which is non foaming. Please note: In October 2023 we removed Green Beaver Zesty Orange from the table below because it does contain mint. Brand Tablets - the majority of scientific research has been done into how pastes work in combination with brushing, not tablets, so there is no guarantee that these will offer the same protection. Watch out for ones that are also fluoride-free (see above).

Our experts examined some of the key ingredients used in popular toothpastes and found all have good evidence to support them, but one type may work better for you than another. The higher the hydrogen peroxide content, the more effective the toothpaste will be at whitening. Keep in mind that this could make the product more likely to irritate your teeth and gums. A unique re-mineralizing formula that keeps your teeth plaque-free for an almost disconcerting amount of time. Both the Citrus and Grape flavors are fully mint-free. Available at multiple online outlets. I can’t attest to the whitening power of any product because I actively avoid thinking about tooth whiteness. I generally avoid whitening products because I care about the long-term integrity of my dental enamel more than I do about having a perfectly-white smile.

What are some of the top ingredients to look for in the best natural toothpastes?

Joiner A. (2011). A silica toothpaste containing blue covarine: A new technological breakthrough in whitening. Sensitive tooth formulas tend to be gentler rather than burn. My spouse has used Sensodynefor years. Whenever I’ve borrowed it, it’s never burned me as much as the regular stuff, especially the varieties not specifically advertised as mint. You can find it anywhere. We get it at Costco. Sodium bicarbonate is an effective stain remover with mild abrasive action. It also has some anti-bacterial properties. It’s a favourite for ‘natural’ toothpastes, for example Arm & Hammer uses it across its range. Charcoal

It’s not the only toothpaste out there that has re-mineralizing ingredients, although it’s the only one I’ve found in non-mint flavors; Apagard and Linhart both have similar active ingredient claims and are both described by reviewers as less harshly minty than other toothpastes. Could be worth a shot. The Classic Citrus: Colgate Lemon & Salt Twice is explicitly anti-pseudoscience (!) and pro-social. Thought it’s not the cheapest, you can buy a small size to try it first and cancel the subscription if you don’t like it. As mentioned above, as far as mint toothpastes go, the Early Bird mint version pretty good. So as long as you don't have expectations that a whitening toothpaste will change the underlying colour of your tooth enamel, there may be value in buying a toothpaste which makes whitening claims, as it could contain stain-removing ingredients that a standard paste won't have. Hydroxyapatite: limits bacteria, reduces plaque buildup, eases tooth sensitivity and restores enamel to help strengthen teeth against cavities. (“This is the most highly recommended ingredient if you’re looking for a non-fluoride toothpaste,” DiFoggio says.)Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) - a foaming detergent that dissolves dirt and grease. It can be quite harsh. A 2019 systematic review found that SLS-free toothpastes reduced the number and duration of mouth ulcers so if you suffer from these, you may want to choose a toothpaste without SLS. Alternatives include cocamidopropyl betaine, lauryl glucoside and disodium cocoyl glutamate. Please don’t get this stuff. If you really want to try it, I’ll mail what I have left to you (4 oz minus a couples of little dabs). I’m serious. I have no idea what to do with this tube of toothpaste that I will never willingly use again. Two tries and my teeth actively look worse. Fluoride Rinses Intrinsic staining happens inside your teeth and can be caused by trauma, certain medical treatment or excessive childhood fluoride consumption (but this is rare in the UK). Teeth also yellow as we age, due to thinning enamel. The only way to remove intrinsic staining is bleaching through dentist-administered professional products (using hydrogen peroxide). If you’ve ever had any kind of oral piercing, you probably know about Biotene mouthwash. There’s also Biotene Toothpaste. You can find it at most drugstores or online.
