About this deal

At some point early on, Isabela received a vision from her Uncle Bruno who told her that some day Isabela would be able to live the life of her dreams, and he also told her that her powers would "grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine". When Isabela tries to drag Mirabel out with her vines, Mirabel insists that she's sorry, and, struggling against the vines, says that she wasn't trying to ruin Isabela's life. She insists that there are much bigger problems, and calls Isabela a "selfish, entitled princess." Isabela accuses Mirabel of only ever messing up her life. Mirabel tells Isabela that nothing is ruined and she can still get married to Mariano. Isabela confesses to Mirabel that she never wanted to marry Mariano in the first place and she was only doing it for the family. In Isabela's anger, she accidentally creates a cactus. After realizing who she really is, she stains her dress with various colors: dark indigo, yellow, green, red, and blue. Her hair is also stained, and the pink flower hairpiece on the left side of her head is gone. Nearing the end of the movie, she remodels her dress again: into a brighter indigo with red-to-orange splotches and a green one at the bottom of dress, as well as a vine-like accessory on her right hand. She also adds multicolored flowers to the design and dyes a streak of her hair in a deep turquoise color. She also now wears an orange anthurium flower in place of where her pink flower hairpiece used to be.

Firstly, Mirabel's glasses were, in fact, an important aspect of her design. As stated by Lorelay Bové, a production designer for the film: "One of the film’s main themes is perspective — how different points of view can affect a relationship — and having our main character wear glasses was an intentional choice to reinforce that theme." [10] During the song, " We Don't Talk About Bruno", Isabela recalls the vision that Bruno gave her about how she's guaranteed to live her dream life, as well as him telling her what her power was going to be. She also tells Mirabel that she doesn't want to hear her say anything during the dinner.

At the start of the film, it is the morning of Antonio's fifth birthday, meaning that he is expected to receive a gift by the end of the day. Some kids in the Encanto arrive at la Casa Madrigal, and ask Mirabel what type of gift Antonio has, to which Mirabel replies that they’ll find out that night. When the kids keep asking about the family, Mirabel talks about the family, introducing her grandmother, cousins, sisters, parents, aunt and uncles in "The Family Madrigal". Mirabel is a young girl who may be imperfect and "weird," but is also empathetic and emotional. [2]

At the beginning of the film, on the morning of Antonio's gift ceremony, Dolores is helping around the house to get everything ready. When Mirabel was concluding her talk about her family in the song "The Family Madrigal", Alejandra told Alma that Mirabel was about to tell her and the rest of the kids about her magical gift, only for Dolores to tell the kids that Mirabel didn't receive one. Dolores is the quiet second grandchild of the Madrigal family. Because she has hearing so advanced she can literally hear pins drop on top of the noise in her normal environment, she doesn't like to talk much herself. She has a hard time keeping the secrets that she hears with her powers. Isabela Madrigal: Isabela is Dolores' older cousin by a few weeks. Being younger than her, Dolores grew up being overshadowed all her life by Isabela to the point of being called her shadow. Although their relationship is described as complicated, in the film it seems that both are very close and it is clear that they love each other very much to the point of looking like sisters. Dolores at no time ever showed jealousy towards Isabela for being their family's golden child, unlike Mirabel. Dolores does not treat her badly or hate her because of her commitment to Mariano, the man she had fallen in love with. Dolores even seems to have some admiration for her older cousin, presumably having a better understanding of Isabela than Mirabel initially had. In the graphic novel, Dolores is seen smiling alongside her parents when Isabela makes her entrance before Antonio's gift ceremony and during the ceremony, Dolores was affectionately hugging Isabela and they held hands with her. Despite that, Dolores can also play pranks on Isabela like Camilo does, if not on a smaller scale. At breakfast, Dolores gives her a snooty look after freaking Isabela out by saying Mariano wanted to have five babies with her, though she was lying about that.

When the dinner is ruined and everyone leaves the dining room, Isabela walks past Mirabel and proclaims that she hates her.
