About this deal

I start by putting my fingers into the middle of the ball and pulling out a chunk. You can weigh them at this point too, so that you know you’ve got about 50g in each section. If you’re using two 50g balls there’s obviously no need to weigh them or pull them apart in this way, you’ll just need to find the end of each ball and match them as I’ll describe below. This is shown on the video if you want to watch how to do it. Depending how easily you found your match, you may well need to wind your single pulled-apart ball of yarn into two properly neat balls ready for working with. Do this however you like – use a ball winder, a nostepinne or wind by hand – remembering to make sure that both balls will start from the same place. Some down booties are designed with an elastic cuff closure that fits snug around the ankle or lower leg. The elasticity stretches and conforms to the wearer’s leg, thus providing a secure closure without any added bulk from toggles or strings. Elastic cuffs are simple and can be comfortable if the fit is just right. However, if they are too loose or tight, you are limited in adjustability. Our choice for a down bootie with an elastic closure? The Montane Icarus Hut Boot Style Slippers. Hold the two DPNs with your left hand. Insert the wool needle purl-wise into the first stitch on the front DPN and pull the yarn through. Don’t take the stitch off the DPN. Washing your booties is no problem if the proper precautions are taken. Here are 10 steps to wash and dry your booties with ease:

It’s not really necessary to use a stitch marker to indicate the end of your round when using DPNs, although I find it useful to mark needle one. I use a safety pin, which I pin into the knitting on needle one – although more attractive markers are available! After a long day of hiking, you’ll want to slip your feet into something comfy. Comfort is largely a matter of personal preference. Assuming that you’re working with 60 stitches, knit the first 16 stitches onto your first needle, continuing in K2 P2 rib. When you have knitted half of the stitches, pull the cable through the stitches (being careful not to slide them off the end) and leave a loop of cable before knitting the rest of the stitches onto the needle. This is what gives you the “magic loop”. (I think it looks like a large prawn! 🙂 Look for a good-fitting bootie that doesn’t slip but is also large enough to not constrict your feet. More robust soles will add comfort if you plan on walking around camp in your booties.

To join into the round, simply knit the first stitch of needle one onto needle five, pulling the yarn tightly for the first two stitches (circled in the picture). This helps to reduce ladders and should be done every time you change needles. You will be able to sew up the small gap where you knitted the first two rows on the DPNs later with your tail end.Down booties range widely in price. Inexpensive booties often are a simple design and fewer features. More expensive premium down booties have extras like robust soles for walking outside, more down, and a higher cut. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have decreased to the number of stitches that you cast on, then work straight until the foot is the required length. The insulation throughout the boot is OR’s specially designed Vertical X polyester for breathability, moisture management, and trusted warmth performance—even in wet conditions. The next thing is to find the end of the ball in the section that you’ve just taken out (I’m going to call this the “inside ball”) and see what colour it is. Ignore the colour at the very end of the ball and start with the next colour in – this is because you don’t know where the yarn was cut in the mill so you can’t use the first colour as a comparison. Now take a look at the yarn that’s at the other end of the section, still attached to the main ball, and that’s what you’re going to match. Pull some of the yarn out of the inside ball (pulling from the centre of the ball) and lay it out in front of you so that you can see how the colours change, and then do the same with the “outside ball” and this is what the P2tog looks like. It gives a nice neat finish to your heel with no gappy holes.

Start by working half of the stitches off the first needle onto your long circular needle, continuing in the K2 P2 rib that you worked on the DPNs. If you find that your knitting is turning inside out, don’t worry. It’s very easy to fix – just put your hand inside your knitting and pull it the right way out! We’ve all done it, it’s one of those fun beginner things! 🙂 For design, the warmest down booties cover not just your feet but also will cover your shins. Look for down booties that are designed to give you max coverage when shopping for warm booties. Wrap the yarn again, this time over both of your fingers and the yarn you’re holding. Make sure that you’ve still got tight hold of the end of the yarn in your palm. If you’re knitting on four DPNs, then just divide the total number of stitches by three. You’ll split them across your needles in exactly the same way as in the following pictures but won’t use the fourth needle as you’ll need that to knit with.

1000 fillpower down

While natural down made from bird feathers is a powerful insulation material, it is easy for abuse to occur in the supply chain. Many outdoor companies are making efforts to source down ethically and provide transparency to consumers. Designed with a Vegan quilted upper insulation, the Teva ReEMBER will keep your feet warm while doing chores around the house or hanging out by the bonfire at camp. Their treaded soles are sturdy, allowing for extended outdoor use and mileage. While we wouldn’t want to hike in the snow with these on, they are perfect for that morning stroll to the local coffee house.

When shopping down items, you may notice certain products have a blue RDS Logo on them. This stands for “Responsible Down Standard,” which is a global certification meaning the down came from a farm and supplier that’s been audited and complies with RDS standards for sourcing the down humanely and ethically. Cinch Cuff This is a simple way to wind a centre-pull ball if you don’t have a ball winder or nostepinne to use. This will work whether you’re left or right-handed, although I’m showing you how to do it from my right-handed perspective – just reverse the instructions if you need to! This is also shown on the video so if you want to watch how to do it, you’ll find it there. If I follow your instructions and k1 ssk, k24 sts etc, and place a marker, this will result in my toe shaping being top to bottom rather than either side of the toes. What have I done wrong? Remember to adjust the yarn that you’re wrapping from time to time so that you create a ball shape rather than just wrapping over and over in the same place. Overall, when considering cuff length in a pair of down booties, think about how and where you’ll be using the shoes the most. If you’re buying down booties for use in more mild climates or just to use around the house, a shorter cuff length would suit you just fine. If you live in a place that sees colder, wet winters, you’ll probably want to snag a pair that has more coverage if you’ll be out in the elements more frequently.
