About this deal

Iguanodon was the second dinosaur ever to be named. The first Iguanodon fossil was a tooth. It was discovered in England by the wife of medical doctor and geologist Dr Gideon Mantell. Mantell named the specimen Iguanodon, because the tooth resembled that of an iguana. This early Cretaceous dinosaur grew to around 3 metres (10 ft.)in length and weighed around 80 kg (176 lb). Its name, which means ‘terrible claw’, refers to the deadly claw found on each of its feet. If you’re looking for a little bit of adventure on your next nail set, then it’s time to give dinosaur nail art a try! Dinosaurs are fascinating because they’re portrayed in so many different ways. Are you looking for something fun, cool, or scary? From the fierce and realistic look to the cute little smiley dinos, there’s a look for you. Tyrannosaurus grew to around 12 metres (40 ft.)in length, and weighed up to 8 metric tonnes (9 short tons). It lived right to the end of the Cretaceous Period, becoming extinct along with all of the other non-bird dinosaurs in the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event.

Everything that we know about Abelisaurus comes from a single, incomplete skull! From this fossil scientists have been able to deduce the dinosaur’s likely lifestyle, diet and size. Ornithischian dinosaurs developed a wide range of adaptations, including horns, frills, armor, bone-heads, and head crests. Examples Of Famous Ornithischian DinosaursUnlike the teeth of theropods, those of sauropods met at the tips – probably for biting off clumps of vegetation. This distinctive meat-eater had two horns on its head. Its name means ‘meat-eating bull’ on behalf of these bull-like horns. View gallery Length: Approximately 15-18 meters (49-59 feet), recent estimates suggest it might have been the largest of all known carnivorous dinosaurs Apatosaurus was a huge sauropod dinosaur. It lived in the late Jurassic Period. It weighed between 20 and 30 metric tonnes (22 and 33 short tons), and was around 20 to 23 metres (65 and 75 ft.)in length.

Confusingly, it is theropod dinosaurs, rather than ornithischians, that eventually evolved into birds. Birds, the only dinosaurs to have survived the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event that took place 66 million years ago, are theropods. Several ankylosaurs, including the largest and best-known dinosaur in the group, Ankylosaurus, had bony tail clubs. These were likely used as a defensive weapon against predators. Velociraptor was a small, bird-like, predatory dinosaur of the late Cretaceous Period. Its name–which means ‘swift plunderer’–accurately describes this speedy, fierce carnivore. Apatosaurus achieved its colossal size by eating plants rather than meat. It may have used its long tail as a whip to protect itself from predators.Ankylosaurians were members of a larger group of dinosaurs called Thyreophora, otherwise known as the ‘shield-bearers’, or ‘armored dinosaurs’. This group also included Stegosaurians such as stegosaurus. In the first section of this guide to dinosaur identification we describe the three main types of dinosaurs and their typical characteristics. (We also explain that animals such as plesiosaurs and pterosaurs were not dinosaurs) Also alive at the same time as dinosaurs were various crocodylomorphs (a group of reptiles that includes the ancestors of today’s crocodilians). These reptiles inhabited both freshwater and marine habitats. Some grew very large and would even have preyed on large dinosaurs.

Giganotosaurus means ‘giant southern lizard’. This giant predator walked on two legs and was even bigger than Tyrannosaurus. Although most ornithischians were herbivores, some are thought to have been omnivores and some are even thought to have had carnivorous lifestyles. The function of the frill is unknown; research suggests that it may have been too fragile to have been used as armor, in which case it may have been used as a display to attract mates, or as a weapon against rivals of the same species. Dinosaur identification guide: find and identify dinosaurs by their characteristics and discover different dinosaur groups. Dinosaur Identification Brontosaurus, like other sauropods, probably traveled in herds and used their sheer size as a primary defense against predators.

15. Dinosaur Snack Mix

Dinosaur characteristics include armor, crests, sails, clubbed tails and numerous other physical features. Some of these characteristics are unique to a single dinosaur group, others are found in members of more than one of three main types of dinosaurs.
