Ambitious chef and restaurant owner Scarlett is set in her ways and dismisses her co-owner's suggestion to make her menus more seasonal for the Christmas period. When she is persuaded to go on a holiday cooking getaway, she is reunited with a rival chef from her past, who along with his students offers some lessons in life. When it comes to Christmas films, there is no shortage of love and romance – but it’s all overwhelmingly straight. Even Love Actually filmed a queer storyline among its 524 interweaving plots, before deciding it should be cut from the film, leaving that “Colin goes to America” abomination intact. And so Todd Haynes’s Carol, a beautifully shot adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel in which department store worker Therese (Rooney Mara) falls in love with a mysterious older woman (Cate Blanchett) in the run up to Christmas, is a welcome break from heteronorm-nativity.

Party planner Holly must persuade architect Theo that a festive event will build his business, while he thinks a digital presentation is enough to win the commercial contract he is after. Things continue to go well with Kris boosting sales to the store. Word spreads among the children that he is indeed the real Santa Claus, although Dorey’s six-year-old daughter Susan (Wilson) remains a Christmas sceptic. Meanwhile, the Santa Claus whom Kris replaced hatches a plot to frame his successor, leaving Dorey and her attorney boyfriend Bryan (McDermott) to build a case to support Kris and prove he is indeed the real Santa Claus. Did you know? Originally, the part of Buddy was written with Jim Carrey in mind and the whole script was far darker than the eventual film. I can relate, having commuted on a train for seven years of my life, and I truly get this story, maybe writer Alastair Galbraith used to do the daily commute.Clark is trying desperately to give his family a perfect Christmas. But things don’t go as planned when the extended family show up, not only are his parents fighting with his in-laws, but his cousin Eddie (Quaid) also turns up unannounced and starts living in a camper van on the Griswald property. Did you know? For the role of B.Z., the producers originally offered the part to Harrison Ford who turned them down. They made offers to Dustin Hoffman, Burt Reynolds and Johnny Carson - all of whom, for one reason or another, also turned the part down, before it was offered to John Lithgow who made the role his own. Accomplished restaurateur and cookery book author Julie Wilson, from Chicago, is about to publish her new Christmas-themed curated recipe book when she finds herself in Wisconsin, attempting to wrangle a gingerbread recipe from widower Kris Thompson, the owner of bakery store The Homestead. This Santa origin story pulls out all the stops and has become a cult classic. A woodcarver named Claus (Huddleston), delivers toys with his wife Anya to the village children. One night they are lost in a blizzard, are saved by elves and taken to the North Pole where the woodcarver fulfills his destiny to become Santa Claus. It's a love story, it's a comedy, it's so much more than that, I found it rather an enchanting watch, I got into it straight away, and found the characters so rich. What a cast list, what an astonishing wealth of British talent here, so many favourites, Timothy Spall, Kaya (glorious) Scodelario, Joanna Scanlan, Ben Miller and many more.
