About this deal

More than 28.1 million people in England – more than 7 in 10 of eligible adults – have now had their booster following the rapid expansion of the vaccination programme over the last month. This includes around 90% of those aged 50 and over who are eligible. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has today advised that, thanks to the success of the programme, the offer of an initial booster dose should end when the current autumn campaign ends, which will be on Sunday 12 February.

Myocarditis and pericarditis are inflammatory heart conditions and are very rare risks of mRNA vaccines. These rare side effects are more common in men under the age of 30 years after their second primary vaccine dose. The risk of these side effects appears to be lower after the first booster. But even highly effective vaccines often become less so over time. Getting another jab of the vaccine several months after the first round, called a “booster shot,” can help supercharge the vaccine’s effectiveness. But first, it's important not to overlook this fact: vaccinating the unvaccinated should be a much bigger priority than giving booster shots to those who've received vaccines. That goes for people in the US who have been unable or unwilling to get the vaccine, and people in places throughout the world with limited access to vaccines. The JCVI advised yesterday that those who are immunosuppressed and have received a third dose of the vaccine will also be offered a fourth dose to boost their defence. Second doses of the vaccine will be offered to 12 to 15 year olds, with at least 12 weeks between doses, to ensure they have maximum protection against this virus. From today, every adult in England who had their second dose two months ago can pre-book an appointment for that vital top-up jab.

Some of those in the original nine priority groups will not be eligible for the top-up until the new year.

Vaccine confidence is high, with data from the Office for National Statistics showing nearly all (94%) of those aged 50 to 69 say they would be likely to get their COVID-19 booster if offered, with the figure rising to 98% for those over 70. If you have any concerns about getting a booster, talk to your GP, nurse, pharmacist or vaccinator. After your COVID-19 booster dose So far, the biggest and most successful vaccination drive in health history has delivered over 117 million vaccinations, including over 32 million boosters. Even with a good vaccine response, people with weaker immune systems may benefit from extra protection against COVID-19. people who are autistic and have some types of health conditions which could make them more poorly if they got coronavirusEvery eligible adult can book their booster jab from today as the NHS COVID-19 Vaccination programme seeks to protect the nation from the new Omicron strain of the virus. If you are eligible for the autumn booster but think you have missed a previous booster you should still go ahead – you will not need another dose. The NHS vaccination programme will offer every adult the chance to book a COVID-19 booster vaccine by the end of the year in a race to protect the nation against the Omicron variant. To book your vaccines speak to your doctor to book an appointment and tell them about any reasonable adjustments you may need.
