About this deal

The Banshees of Inisherin is a character study of an island, the small group of people on that island, and two friends who are forced by the decision of one friend to go their separate ways. It takes place in 1923 and transports viewers to a place that almost exists outside of conventional contexts, painting a bleak, repressive community that presents an odd twist on the human condition. Conceptually speaking, it's original, darkly funny and sad. I watched it with my wife and we found ourselves transfixed, trying to absorb the narrative's offbeat situations, and supporting subtext, while sometimes laughing aloud at the dark humor, that seemed to purposefully make us question our sensibilities.

The performances of (left to right) Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan received critical acclaim, with all four being nominatedfor Academy Awards in their respective categories. a b " The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)". For Pádraic's red jumper, Mhaoldomhnaigh envisioned what his sister Siobhán would have genuinely been motivated to make for him. "I can imagine Siobhán thinking, 'Oh my God, the winter's going to be very cold. I'm going to knit him a jumper,' then making the little collar as a kind of personal touch... there's a beautiful naiveté to the way he dresses, but it's very tender as well, that idea that she adds this little touch to it. I think it says so much about him and his relationship with Siobhán, and his relationship with where he lives and his Irishness," Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh explained. [32] Ben Davis BSC". Independent Talent. From director-writer Martin McDonagh comes a unique film starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Although Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) have been lifelong friends, they find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, bringing alarming consequences for both of them. On the surface this isn't a deep film and, seems to come at you using an approach that some may not easily connect with. Be that as it may, there is no denying that it kept us watching, as its undeniably fetching story unfolded, leaving us to ponder how it would end. I can tell you that the ending, like the film, is less than conventional. I thoroughly enjoyed the performances by the cast, across the board. Gleeson and Farrell’s chemistry onscreen never disappoints. I also felt that Kerry Condon made the most of every scene she was in, stealing many of them. The friendship of these two friends is put to the ultimate test in a manner of dry humor and emotional distance. It’s easy to see a bit of yourself in both of these characters and their desperation to find some meaning in life. Sure, it’s easy to laugh at Pádraic for being so dim that he knows common French phrases or famous composers. Yet Pádraic also desires a routine and normalcy that throws his whole life out of balance when change threatens him. Colm may be easier to identify with in how he finds life meaningless and struggles to fight off dark thoughts through his art. At the same time, his irrationality in trying to push Pádraic away is as sad as it is hilarious.

Finally, I decided that, in the absence of any excitement or volatility in their lives, these fellas had to create some drama just to feel ALIVE. Lost in the tedium of their daily habits and tiny spheres of influence, they seemed to be resorting to desperate measures to create some sort of SOAP OPERA for themselves. I found it bizarre, fascinating, and at times grotesque. More than one extreme action made me wonder....WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? For me, the most relatable character was the one played by Kerry Condon: bright, sharp, willful, strong, and decisive. When she made a bold and adventurous decision, I applauded her courage and thought....YOU GO, GIRL! Watching the characters wallow in depression and loneliness was not always comfortable for me, but it was REAL. How many people on this earth feel the need to drown their sorrows and drink their disappointments away at a local pub day in and day out? You don't have to be Irish or have any Irish heritage to understand that universal pastime. If the ostensible "allegorical" subtext of The Banshees of Inisherin is therefore at least debatable if not outright questionable, the film also D'Alessandro, Anthony (25 February 2022). As Colm soon reveals, he’s grown weary with life and is having an existential moment, grappling with the prospect that he’ll leave nothing behind in this world. Desiring immortality, Colm aims to compose a brilliant piece of music and believes severing ties with Pádraic will help in this artistic endeavor. Pádraic, however, can’t understand this, hence why Colm was reluctant to confess his despair.positively afflicted that his BFF has forsaken him. This is not to excuse some "bad behavior" on the part of Pádraic, however. Foster, Roy (24 January 2023). "How Ireland's violent history haunts 'The Banshees of Inisherin' ". New Statesman .
