A'bunadh is exclusively aged in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts [1] and therefore has a sweeter, softer flavour than most scotch. A'bunadh is not chill filtered. Alba is the perfect counter-point to the classic A’bunadh, while still offering those familiar sweet, fruity notes which are rooted in the new spirit’s DNA … there are, however, stark differences in color and body, which should intrigue A’bunadh devotees and welcome new drinkers to the concept we lovingly know as ‘the original.’ The first is how far I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of whisky and, after some rudimentary maths, makes my face flush bright red - I’ve spent a lot of money on liquid that has briefly passed through the conduit of my wibbling facade and out into the national network of underground plumbing.

The distillery cite the story during distillery tours that when the second pair of stills were put in during 1975, a time capsule was discovered behind the name plate, containing an 1898 newspaper about the distillery fire wrapped around an 1898 bottle of Aberlour. The workmen who discovered the bottle polished off four fifths of the bottle during their lunch break, but the remains of the bottle went off to the laboratories in Keith, Moray, and were analysed. A'bunadh is an attempt to recreate this single malt. Nose: Rum and toffee brittle lead the way, with banana, flambéed in butter and sugar, served on a hot pancake. Chocolate-coated raisins and soft, juicy prunes develop with just a dash of mace. It’s one of the most incredibly evocative aromas, and is about as close to “winter fireside” as you’re ever likely to get…

The distillery that today produces the iconic Aberlour whisky was founded in 1879 by James Fleming, who built it using water from St. Drostan's Well, which was named after an early Columban monk. Prior to this, there was another distillery in the area between the years of 1825 and 1833, but this shouldn't be confused with the long-running whisky producers to whom we can attribute the fine whisky we know and love today. Like its namesake sibling, Alba is also bottled as a NAS at cask strength, without the addition of any color or the use of chill filtering. I’ll say it again - this is the perfect whisky bottle design. Wide, sturdy, stoic, dumpy. Great hand feel. Great pouring action. Beautiful glass prism through which to view the gorgeous glow of whisky. Nice wee label. Giant stopper. Tactile wax-dipped tip. It’s all there. I wish more distilleries would do a wee dumpy bottle like this, but more often than not there’s a tendency for people to use taller glass.
