About this deal

This book is an examination of 'who can you trust?' It's about mothers trying to protect their children and about the truth. Like all books with a mystery, I did my own super sleuthing and came up with a list of subjects. I guessed two of the plot twists early on, but I still found this book to be enjoyable. Confession, Samuel was my favorite character. I feel he was the most developed and richly drawn character. He is devious, manipulative, and cruel, yet he is also a little sympathetic. He is the most complicated character in this book, and I love complicated characters. He's unlikeable yet, has suffered emotional pain in his life which has fueled his anger and actions. First, most of the story is told from Rose's point of view, in a 'step-by-step' format. I have a problem with this kind of narrative, which tends to be circumscribed and slow-moving. When you read a KL Slater novel you can guarantee a fast paced plot, great characters and a story that builds up to an unbelievable crescendo. This one is no exception to the authors already impressive catalogue of novels that I enjoy. Keep them coming.. This is the first book of KL Slater that I read, and liked the story as well as the tempo she maintains. I certainly look forward to reading more of her books, and certainly recommend this one!

Will Josie forever be known as the murdered boy’s sister and mother of the kidnapped girl? Will the evil event pass “through the generations like an ill wind” or will Josie be able to press pause and rewrite Ivy’s future? I read The Mistake with three of my Traveling Sisters and we really enjoyed reading this one together and discussing “The Mistake”. K L Slater is one of my top 10 writers that I eagerly await her next book. I love her style, I admire the way her mind works and I love how to can make 'ordinary' into 'extraordinary'.While Rose is in Ronnie's attic, she finds something that casts doubt on the identity of Billy's killer. In fact, it's possible the wrong person has been imprisoned for the crime. No matter the consequences, Rose feels she MUST discover the truth. Lucie and Blake have suddenly found themselves living every parents worst nightmare. The day after their beloved daughter Grace's ninth birthday, they agreed to let her walk home from her best friend Olivia's house. It was only a five minute walk and they had a plan in place so they could observe her along the way. But despite all their careful planning, somewhere between the two houses, Grace completely vanished into thin air. I have to mention 2 wonderful characters Nadine ( Lucies MIL) who I pictured kinda Joan Collinsey and was wonderful in her ( unwarranted ) cutting remarks and Barbara Charterhouse ( a local resident who actually plays a vital role in the end ) who was equally awesome in her twin tweeds and brusque manner! Lucie and Blake Sullivan are facing a parent's worst nightmare. Grace has just turned 9 and begged to be allowed to walk home alone from her friend's house .. a 5-minute walk... with Blake watching in secret from this end and the friend's father watching from the other end. They joke with friends about hiding behind bushes to ensure she is safe. But the joke turns sour when Grace does not appear.

The story is told mainly from Lucie's perspective, over two timelines - now, with Grace missing, and before, detailing Lucie's life prior to Blake. There is the occasional brief chapter from an unknown person which, I believe, added nothing of value.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. When Rose is only 18 she meets such a man. A very charming older man Gareth, who begins sweeping her off her feet. Ignoring her inner voice and friends warnings, she is soon in over her head, unable to break free. Now, let's get to the good stuff - the end was superb. There is no doubt that Slater is a very clever writer. I have read all four of her books. Safe With Me and Liar were 5-star reads. Blink, 3-star. The Mistake 3.5-star, upgraded because of the ending, of which I am not going to speak again for fear of giving something away. That news puts Josie on red alert; after all, her daughter with ex-husband Terry is Jimmy's age when he died and Samuel once had a "thing" for Josie. If that weren't enough, his mother Maggie seems to be stalking her. But balancing her need to be extra-watchful of Ivy and keep an eagle eye on her fledgling business, Delicious Desserts, proves almost impossible, even with friend Fiona there to be Ivy's caregiver when needed - which these days, is a good bit of the time. By the time the inevitable happens - Ivy does indeed go missing - just about every character is a suspect. Josie, though, has no doubt whatsoever: the culprit is the same man who murdered her little brother.
