About this deal

Up until I was about five, I had been delighted to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Titch, but when I first came across Amazing Grace, I remember the warmth that grew in my tummy. She is a contributing editor at Grazia and a presenter on Lorraine , and her writing has appeared in the Guardian , Harper's Bazaar , Stylist , Metro and Huffington Post . Ultimately, Brathwaite emphasises how your most important relationship is the one you have with yourself, leaving the book with an impactful message of empowerment and self-respect. Leading on from the last heading, Candice explains the importance of expressing your love to someone. Because I was raised in South London in Brixton, I didn’t really understand racism – wherever I looked there were black people.

But when it turns out both boys have been keeping secrets from her, secrets that link back to the life Cynthia thought she had left behind in London, she realises that not everything is as it seems. The characters had so much potential, especially our main characters, Cynthia and Issac, but they were underdeveloped and rushed. The clear cut, loving nature of her voice shines through her writing and is my favourite part about her books.

Black British lit was very thin on the ground [when I was growing up], so I was being fed from my family’s travels to America and my American cousins … [These books] kicked the door off the innocence of the world. An exploration of race, class, love and the complexities of growing up as a black British teen, from bestselling author Candice Brathwaite. I want to show my little community my true authentic self and unfortunately, I can’t commit to everyday posting. It is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young black girl growing up in London. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.

I’m sure many Caribbean children can relate with how open their grandparents and parents are when talking about it. She makes the point that a lot of Black people simply don’t talk about this stuff and she has stepped out of that area to do it: more power to her and I hope this space she’s opening up stays open. I loved both characters I just wish there was more of a plot, as this book heavily just felt like a short period of Cynthia's life in which she was trying to come to terms with her brothers death, and if anything the book actually left more questions than answers, so the ending really did bother me.

The way hateful ideologists are woven into the fabric of elite institutions and society are highlighted and leave you raging. As a Nigerian migrant to the UK at a young age - a time when stories similar to this were not uncommon - I could picture most of the details in this story as I read each page.
