About this deal

This can subjectively make music sound more coherent in the centre but could be quite disorienting when gaming.

The Sundara begins to roll-off noticably at 40Hz and under, while the XS doesn't roll-off until well under 20Hz - although the bass isn't exactly prominent either, being a consistent volume from 20 - 250Hz. B. bei einigen Dire Straits Liedern wo ich das so noch nie gehört habe, auch nicht auf sehr guten Standboxen. They mention that it does the job extremely well, is surprisingly comfortable and lightweight, and is easy to carry. While quite complicated in design, the end result is simple - your sound is reproduced at a consistent volume reliably without unexpected peaks and dips across the frequency response.

The cups have an inverted teardrop/avocado shape where it is wider at the top than the bottom with these huge plush absolutely gorgeous earcups, mine have stayed relatively stiff compared to my Anandas, but given I’ve had the Anandas for 2 years I’m sure these will soften up after more than 6 months. The newly revised headband used on the XS and other more recent HiFiMAN products is a simple all-in-one padded headband with additional limited swivel on the earcups for extra flexibility and comfort.

If all that sounds hokey to you, then a balanced input to your headphone will get you an extra 3dB anyway and make it easier to get to a listenable volume so it's worth a punt. I think I have a fairly big head, but I needed the extra pad as mentioned to get the headphones to sit correctly on my head. These are very large and a good bit larger than the Sundara but it's surprisingly comfortable and lightweight which allows me to wear them all day without issues as I use them for everything audio on my desktop as I don't have speakers. This is the big dealbreaker for the XS over the Sundara, and if it sounds like the XS is simply too big for your head you can stop here. The open-back design not only contributes to the spacious soundstage but also enhances the naturalness of the audio reproduction. This diaphragm is designed to produce lighting-fast responses that create a detailed soundstage without audible distortion.

HiFi Man EF400 headphone amplifier and DAC is a well-designed but great-value headphone amplifier with a lot of finesse and power. I tried the Sundara's but couldn't wear them for more than a couple of minutes - too heavy and too much clamping. I have just tried my Sundara’s on again - I can just feel the ear pads touching my ears, whereas the XS has space all around my ears due to the oval shape. The XS provides a more consistently smooth sound profile as compared to the Sundara, as apparently all SM revisions to other HiFiMAN products do compared to earlier versions without them. Most family/friends are not sure about the look of the headphones - but they all agree on the sound. Connectivity is seamless with the included detachable cable featuring high-quality gold plated connectors.
