About this deal

What Quicksilver has done is create two entry systems to suit regular and goofy foot surfers, the idea being to reduce water flush during wipeouts by placing the entry on the non-lead side. Choosing the right rubber is important, but so is treating your wetsuit well to ensure it will last you as long as possible. Yesteryear's neoprene, which is made from petroleum and is not recyclable using traditional technologies, is replaced by environmentally friendly products, such as Yulex. A performance-based wetsuit with a solid, warm lining, Quiskilver’s wetsuit matched the Rip Curl suit in terms of stretch, with an exceedingly comfortable lining.

The Equation is constructed using neoprene made from 30 per cent recycled tyres and 70 per cent limestone (extracted using sustainable energy sources) and a lining that contains recycled fishing nets which is bonded in place using solvent-free glues. It’s now more flexible, and while it isn’t “stretchy” like some suits on this list, it doesn’t feel like my performance is hindered. Read more about our Nyord wetsuits here Perfect for you if: You’re a regular surfer who needs a wetsuit you can wear mid-spring all the way through to autumn. You can keep your suit seaworthy even longer by re-sealing your wetsuit seams when they start to fail, washing your wetsuit regularly with a wetsuit wash, being gentle when taking your wetsuit on and off, and generally avoiding the downward spiral of negligent wetsuit care.

It's also relatively soft to the touch and far easier to get on and off than most front-zip wetsuits. All in all, it's an innovative and beautifully made wetsuit that will be ideal for seasoned cold-water surfers looking to put their money where their mouth is and make a more eco-friendly purchase. For those who aren’t familiar, their claim to fame is the “3D design” of their suits, which they say fits the shape of the human body better than suits designed in 2D, and I find it hard to disagree. I generally prefer a key loop inside of the front zipper as it can accommodate both my car’s small valet key as well as the larger fob in a waterproof case.

Since durability is a bit harder to capture after only a couple months of testing, that score was weighted less than warmth and stretch, the two main considerations. The neoprene on this suit is awesome – while it isn’t quite as stretchy as Rip Curl’s E7, above, or the Quiksilver, below, it’s super flexible and feels a bit more capable of taking a beating. The O’Neill Hyperfreak Fire is crazy warm, with surprisingly good stretch considering that it’s a 4.It felt like the suit was made for someone a lot shorter, and with a smaller chest than me, which I wouldn’t have expected based on how most other mediums fit me. My one complaint is the lack of a key loop or pocket, but I’ve heard this feature will be rolled out soon across their entire line of suits.

However, it's a super suit, and the latest E4 neoprene is brilliantly stretchy and so easy to don while the furry lining was arguably too hot for some of the sunnier days on the water in the UK, but we're not complaining. After a couple of hard years of supply chain disruptions wreaking havoc on the wetsuit supply, the time was finally right for a full-blown, no-bs, apples-to-apples wetsuit test. While a thinner suit will tire you out less and overall allow for faster reactions, all those advantages go away when your body is tense or even shivering with cold. Surfing and swimming right through a British winter used to be the kind of thing only serious diehards would contemplate, but improved wetsuit technologies now make it more than possible for everyone to enjoy aquatic adventures all year round. The fit was surprisingly good – laid flat the suit looked somewhat boxy (which usually doesn’t bode well for my lanky frame), but it fit like a glove. While they're not quite as stretchy as O'Neill's Hyperfreak range, there's still a lot of give in SRFACE's Japanese limestone-derived neoprene and at no point were paddling or other body movements felt impeded by the 4/3 wetsuit tested.
