About this deal

Spine-strip slightly chipped as usual, slight creasing to cover but a good clean copy of the scarce first edition. I'm sure that at the time (1949), a book of a hundred pages was a reasonable offering, but to simply reprint that when all of the other material is presumably preserved (since it was published in the Mirror from 1947 to 1949 and onwards and the Mirror is preserved) seems wasteful.

This vintage guidebook is filled with articles, photographs and comics and will add so much character to any library it is placed in! The series looked doomed, even more so when it came round to January, the gardener's equivalent of the close season. His weekly articles in the Mirror were not just a snap shot of angling but encompassed the passion, the excitement and the thrill of angling and the countryside.

Somehow John and Rob have captured the essence of angling and of that Crabtree magic with such acuteness it feels that you could be there with them. I've been on a kick recently to try different types of vintage plugs, last year I gave the Flatfish a go and what do you know, they still work! I bought this book as I'd heard a great deal about how it was an inspiration to many young anglers when it was first released in the form of newspaper segments. year-old Tadhg from Oxford accompanies John to the riverbank for a series of lessons in watercraft and the signs of a healthy waterway.

This first series saw presenter John Bailey, [4] an internationally renowned fishing guide, fishing and walking in the footsteps of his angling hero, Mr.The watercolours are so evocative of the British countryside and its wildlife and delight fishermen and non fishermen alike.

Also the suggestion that tackle options was limited is correct as I'm certain the Wallis cast significantly predates the invention of Illingworth's Threadline reel. BOUND IN PICTORIAL LIMP WRAPS, WITH COLOUR ILLUSTRATION OF FISH IN LANDING NET, AND CLEAR TITLES TO FRONT COVER, THIS DATED 1959 FIRST EDITION SIXTH IMPRESSION IS VG. You learn the difference between bottom and top fishing, the weight of tackle for different fish and circumstances.

The Mirror Group, Bernard's employer at the time, never bothered to retain such records, but it is surely the best-selling sports book of all time. The method that JohnH describes is known as a Nottingham cast and is absolutly fine until you are required to cast any sort of real distance, that is when you wish you had learned to Wallis/Avon cast. As I still go fishing and also my young son is now interested, I thought he would like to share in the stories of Mr Crabtree and Peter and hopefully learn a little at the same time. A FAITHFUL REPRODUCTION OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION, AND LOOKING EXACTLY SIMILAR WITH FISH IN LANDING NET TO FRONT COVER AND GREEN CLOTH BACKSTRIP, THIS 5OTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION IS VG. It was an immediate success and developed into a fishing page, with Bernard as the angling correspondent.
