About this deal

As the story progressed, however, it became clear how it was integral to the action - it just took a while to get there. After reading Amy McCulloch’s debut adult thriller, Breathless, in the extreme geographic setting of climbing one of the world’s highest summits where survival is not guaranteed particularly when a murderer is part of the climbing party, I was primed and ready for her next standalone, Midnight, set against the frontier of Antarctica. When she's gifted a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic cruise, Olivia has never been anywhere so spectacular.

The mystery, while generally unappealing, was there, I just couldn't work myself to care enough to figure it out! The danger and the tension intensify in the novel as the voyage gets underway, and soon, some shocking events that take place on board, leave Olivia in turmoil. I was gifted this copy by Vintage Anchor and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review. Midnight is an utterly addictive novel by Amy McCulloch, which takes place in one of the remotest parts of the world, Antarctica, on the maiden voyage of a recently refurbished luxury cruise liner. I did guess the main twist, and there were aspects of it that didn't really ring true, but I enjoyed the ride getting there and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the unexpected turns along the way. Some of the twists were better than others, but it was undoubtedly a brilliant book and I devoured it! A series of events (like attempted murder, ransacking of belongings, feelings of being followed), make it seem like someone on board is out to target Olivia. Aaron is due to organise an art exhibition onboard, but he fails to make it back to ship before it sets sail.Amy McCulloch is a Chinese-White author, born in the UK, raised in Ottawa, Canada, now based in London, UK. All in all, this was a solid good thriller and a fabulous setting for one that I can heartily recommend for a chilling winter read. If you like a cruise-gone-wrong, a locked-room style story or are just ready to take a trip to Antarctica, Midnight is for you!

Good on audio and perfect for fans of books like Will Dean's The last one or Louise Candish's The other passenger. The pieces of the story didn't come together as easily as I would have hoped and I think more detail in some cases might have helped to persuade me. Daarbij brengt ze verrassende wendingen in het verhaal en laat ze je als lezer echt mee puzzelen, naar hoe het verhaal in elkaar zit en wie al deze dingen op zijn of haar geweten heeft. So, a slight notch down from Breathless, but definitely worth reading for those who like their thrillers in remote locations. She is currently working on her next adult thriller, continuing to draw inspiration from her adventures. Although terrified of the water, Olivia has been persuaded by her boyfriend to join him for a once in a lifetime cruise to Antarctica to help their new business.
