The novel expands on and explains several elements of the TV series, such as the breakup of the Luthers' marriage, and the corruption of DCI Ian Reed. It may have had Idris Elba as its moody, brooding lead, but the kind of acclaim that greeted The Wire was not forthcoming. But for anyone who has seen Idris Elba's stunning on-screen portrayal of Luther, this style very much suits that character. Praise of this edition: ' Martin Luther is a readable work that provides a nuanced view of the reformer. This is, quite literally, bloody brilliant' Metro Meet DCI John Luther in the prequel to the BBC's epic series Luther, starring Golden Globe winner Idris Elba.

I loved the way the character was developed throughout the story, and I love that this was a prequel to the series—I just hope there is some more. Cross has always dealt in darkness and been so adept at conjuring bogeymen from the catacombs of mythology that you start to see them everywhere' Guardian 'This story shares the editing technique and visual power of the screen version. I quickly became hooked on it, on paper the tortured cop could come across as a cliche but the writing and performances ensured that didn't happen. Coming out in 2011, around the same time as the second Luther serial, this novel describes the case immediately prior to the TV serial. I have rarely felt such contempt and or disgust for characters and their actions as told in this book, nor have I ever winced at story being told.

Each step Luther takes, each decision he makes, the intensity of his mood and reactions, are captured there on the page, as is the viciousness of the crimes. A sick killer is at large in London, slashing his way through "perfect families", and Luther is in charge of tracking him down.Neil Cross, the creator of the series, is a seasoned novelist and it shows - the writing is economical, taut and evocative. Luther creator Neil Cross has said that the drama is influenced by both Sherlock Holmes and Columbo: the nature of Luther’s intellect and how he applies it to solving crimes is comparable to that of Holmes, whereas the show’s use of the inverted detective format – or the ‘howdunit’ – was inspired by Columbo.
