About this deal

The former chapters include accounts of Leslie's childhood in India and Pakistan during the last days of the Raj and the first days of independence (including a wince-making description of the ghastly treatment she had to have, as a child, after being bitten by a possibly rabid dog), which seems to have given her that sense of old colonial rootlessness that propelled her around the globe in her career. EXCLUSIVEKate is reunited with her three children for the first time in two weeks after leaving hospital. Any mentions of imperialism or capitalism are snortingly dismissed as nonsensical concepts conceived by "fuzzy-wuzzies" with a chip on their shoulder (Ann's casual use of racist language throughout may be catchy) She's been to lots of places, seen lots of things but evidently learnt very little.

Following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, for example, she refused to accept that the Serbs were uniquely guilty of war crimes. In David Randall's book The Great Reporters (celebrating the 13 greatest British and American journalists of all time), the author profiled Ann Leslie as 'the most versatile reporter ever. Then, after a stint covering show business she was appointed Foreign Correspondent of the Daily Mail, an association that endures today, almost forty years later, and one which finally allowed her real talent to shine through. I read this book after hearing her on an old Desert island discs programme BBC, she's old school and obviously a pioneer for her time but the old colonial attitude runs though it all and it rubbed me up the wrong way at times.

I am an independent online bookseller, based near Southampton, Hampshire in the South of England, with approximately 8,000 books - new, second hand, scarce, hard to find and out-of-print books – and have been in business for more than 19 years. It is impossible not to respect the fact that she has managed for decades to smuggle these views – and world-class journalism – into the Daily Mail.

I’ve been having so much trouble with kids using cell phones constantly in class, not paying attention at all. After two were gone, the other three realized I was serious and shut up, after growling a bit about unfairness.

Leslie had attended the course to get the other side of the story after interviewing those high priestesses of women's lib Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem (they hated each other, incidentally). Marcus Rashford 'went on a 12-hour tequila bender in Belfast' as he was spotted in nightclub last week. When the Media Society in 1997 gave her their Lifetime Achievement Award the citation noted that she was only the third person to receive the honour: 'the two previous winners were Sir Alistair Cooke and Sir David Attenborough'. Although Leslie has consorted with various Hollywood stars (James Mason wanted to marry her, and David Niven became exceptionally irate when she spurned his advances) she started to specialise in the dirty side of the job, and the closing chapters of her book concentrate on that: dipping in to the Soviet bloc, covering wars in the Gulf and the Balkans, and generally getting her knees brown and her hands dirty. She avoids the tedious straight narrative of "then I did this then I did that" and instead tells her stories gathered from a lifetime of being a foreign correspondent, first for the Express and then the Daily Mail.Until then, whilst I was aware of her, I'd never read any of her work or taken much notice when she was on television, and had dismissed her as yet another talking head journalist luvvie. Whether you agree with her or not you can always be sure her views are based on her outstanding journalism, and couched in her own sparkling style. She ended up in a "Talibanic" convent school, a "ghastly, cold, damp mausoleum in the Peak District". She also swam against the tide by supporting the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and by projecting a balanced view of the Arab- Israeli conflict. A year later she moved to Fleet Street and was given a column headlined: 'She's young, she's provocative, and she's only 22.
