About this deal

In Tarpley's gracefully told story, a young African American heroine celebrates her lovely head of hair as part of her heritage. Your payment method will be charged immediately, and the product is expected to ship on or around November 1, 2003. This is seen when her cornrows blend with the rows of crops in a field or her afro blends with an image of the earth in space. For 20 years or so, I refused to wear my hair naturally because I did not appreciate or remember my natural texture. Teaching Idea: I would let my African American students read this book so they could feel good about themselves.

Lewis's (Creativity; Staying Cool) realistic watercolors take fanciful flight as parent and child describe what can be done with the girl's locks: braids at the top of Keyana's head become hoed rows of vegetables in a field behind her as Mama explains that she can ""plant rows of braids along your scalp, the way we plant seeds in our garden""; and, pictured against the night sky, the child's Afro-styled hair metamorphoses into an image of the earth as she notes that, when she lets it ""go any which-way it pleases,"" her hair surrounds her head ""like a globe. She would sit and think about her hair and compare it to yarn, garden rows, or a planet out in space. My best bits: I love the true to life illustrations, the poetic way that afro hairstyles are described and the reference to the black power movement. Within our salon you'll find a truly relaxing vibe with plenty of space to feel comfortable and at ease with our experienced stylists.

This is a wonderful book about a young girl finding self-empowerment and community connection through the many ways she can wear her hair. When family recipes are passed down from one generation to the next, stories often accompany them; so it is with the tea cakes that Tosh's grandmother, Honey, bakes for him. Wearing an Afro was a way for them to stand up for what they believed, to let the world know that they were proud of who they were and where they came from. But the style also has historical importance, for, as her teacher tells her, ""wearing an Afro was a way.Together, author and artist impart a reassuring message for all children about the importance of appreciating what they look like as part of who they are. I imagine the story is also empowering and brings beauty to Black hair because of the uplifting and positive descriptions of each style. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. I have even had some students jealous of my students with Black hair while my students with Black hair are simultaneously jealous of students with straight hair. This story also draws on traditions, cultural identity, and how we determine what we like about ourselves.
