Much of the high end video formats (HEVC) are too heavy for my computer - I can view and edit them after installing appropriate codecs AND upgrading editing software, but it's so slow and glitchy. And that included a short overheating break for the new model, which we didn't get on the Hero 8 Black.

The new battery boosts its stamina a little, but it's only a minor improvement and we found the Hero 9 Black more prone to overheating that its predecessors. Collectively, these new features feel like a response to the DJI Osmo Action, a fresh-faced rival that in some ways made GoPro action cameras feel a little dated. Update 16/9/20: GoPro has released some new firmware for the Hero 9 Black, which could resolve some of the slight issues we found with its touchscreen interface and auto exposure – we'll update this review as soon as we've tested it fully. Again, the Hero 9 Black does take some good quality slow motion clips that are great for breaking up your social media videos. HyperSmooth stabilization remains the best you can get from an action camera, and the in-camera horizon leveling is a useful (if not entirely flawless) addition. This motion smoothing technology can be used in numerous shooting modes to record the smoothest possible video running at 60fps.

An oldie, but a goodie, the Hero 5 Black is unfortunately showing its age now but is still a worthwhile pickup if you can score a deal. The 1080p fps capabilities are slightly lower too and you also don't get the new HyperSmooth, SuperSmooth or Live Streaming features either. It's a nice touch that fast-tracks the editing process, but it's more of a firmware upgrade than a headline-worthy feature.But if you shoot for the big screen and need a tough B-cam to go into places that your dedicated video camera can't reach, then it could be the best GoPro for you. With mixed, intermittent use (shooting video, stills and time-lapses), our Hero 9 Black lasted around 4-5 hours. GoPro also offers a more compact, stripped-back Hero 11 Black Mini and, while no longer part of GoPro’s 2023 lineup, you can still find the budget-friendly Hero 9 Black. Fantastic camera, but make sure your computer can handle all the video formats and your phone can work with the new gopro app! But for most people, the Hero 8 Black and Hero 7 Black are perfectly good enough in this department.
