About this deal

E. Lawrence’s Bedouin desert revolt to cutting-edge terraforming techniques and the burgeoning environmentalist movement.

The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice. My copy is from the third printing of this particular edition, so corrections may have been made in subsequent runs, but still: for shame, Hodder, for shame! Many years before the need for climate change on earth was recognised, the dream of transforming a planet’s climate from a superheated dust bowl is an unintentionally relevant prediction. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Dune, the Folio Society has produced a lavish illustrated hardback edition of the book. Then, it struck me that the question of what it means to be human is thematised throughout the novel.

In 2017 the matching edition of Dune Messiah arrived, but it looked like the project had stalled because there were no dates for the rest. I know this is pretty petty and I'm not sure if most people here care about the quality of print, but I recently bought this version of the Dune 50th Anniversary Edition by Hodder Publishing for a reread as it has been about 12 years since I last read it and I wanted to get a refresher before the movies come out.It doesn’t make for natural dialogue at all, but in this particular narrative universe, such futuristic behaviour dovetails beautifully with the rest of the worldbuilding. The Bene Gesserit, the Tleilaxu, and others are embroiled in a struggle for supremacy, while a young woman named Sheeana emerges with a connection to the enigmatic sandworms. Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages.

The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. Author Frank Herbert always preferred the original magazine illustrations by Hugo Award-winning artist John Schoenherr to those of other artists, and this illustrated edition features 12 colour plates by Schoenherr together with an evocative dust-jacket painting. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis’ second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands. He is best known for creating the world of DUNE, which became the bestselling science fiction novel of all time.

God Emperor of Dune": Set thousands of years after the events of the first three books, the fourth installment centers on Leto II, the God Emperor, a being who has transformed himself into a hybrid human-sandworm. The similarities of rich histories, cultures and languages were clear to see; almost as if there was far more background than either of the stories required. His first science-fiction story, ‘Looking for Something’, was published in the pulp-science-fiction magazine Startling Stories (1952), and his first novel, The Dragon in the Sea (1956) was serialised soon afterwards. The conflicts in the plot are not a bipolar battle of Good vs Evil, but instead the conflagration of the church and state, whether the use of atomics can be justified, our relationship with nature, the benefits of human advancement against the drawbacks of substance dependency, and the place of technology in society. These half-human and half-computer characters quickly became more frustrating than fascinating, though. and could not be prouder to present our 50th-anniversary edition of the greatest science fiction novel of all time, newly reset and featuring this glorious new artwork, to a new generation of readers. Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi epic turned 50 this year, and the Folio Society has celebrated by publishing a stunning new edition featuring painted illustrations by Sam Weber. Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender's Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written.
