About this deal
This short but powerful book gives a fresh look at a battle that seems to many of us quite familiar. I was pleased that they included perspectives and stories from different divisions of the German military. Holger Eckhertz's grandfather, a military journalist, interviewed soldiers stationed along the Atlantic Wall shortly before D-Day (June 6, 1944). New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter.
Shortly before D-Day (June 6, 1944) the author's grandfather, a military journalist writing for widely read German military magazines such as Signal and Die Wehrmacht, interviewed soldiers stationed along the Atlantic Wall. However, there is also a very chilling part about the testing of a Nazi "wonder weapon" from a man who seems to be everything you thought Nazi scientists were. To even speak of those attrocities as a German soldier could get you an SS visit and reassignment to oblivion. In each account it was tense, horrific, sad and the same testament to the futility and wastefulness of war. This is a great little book about the viewpoint of the defending German troops on each Allied beach zone on D-Day.
The result is a series of interviews which reveal not only the desperate reactions of German soldiers to the Allied onslaught, but also the surprising mix of motivations which drove them.Hard to read -- given the graphic details of battle -- but gaining perspective on "the other side" makes it worthwhile.
