Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. For this, ladies and gentlemen, is the entire 17-volume OED scrunched up into one manageable volume, the replacement for which will not see the light of day until 2037. From its charming drawer that contains the very necessary magnifying glass to its micro font to its hernia-inducing weight, this treasure trove of words has come to feel like an old friend. In fact (and I realize that by now I am starting to sound a little insane), we have two copies in our house. On the other hand, its gravity feels defiant and not only owning the thing but actually using it feels like a rebellion (maybe even a proper middle finger) against the distraction culture that I simultaneously overindulge in and yet detest. I love my OED and if there were such a thing as the 'Dictionary Police' who went around confiscating peoples dictionaries--they would have to pry this one from my cold dead fingers. As in the Second Edition, the Compact combines in one alphabetical sequence the sixteen volumes of the first OED and the four Supplements --plus an extra five thousand new words to bring this monumental dictionary completely up to date. This edition includes a wide selection of new words and phrases, together with extra advice on how to improve your writing.
