With this brilliant opening we enter what for Churchill was a miserable and dark period of early life. How he managed to bounce between the rigid 19th century British Army and being a journalist alone is stunning. Nonetheless, the factual experiences of Churchill’s early life compete with any fiction, and any liberties taken are pardonable, in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterize the book.There are a few outdated attitudes, almost inevitable in a work of this vintage, and it must be admitted there is a fair bit of the “Huzzah!
