About this deal

Despite the author’s protest that you can weight the springs differently or use a variety of baits to target specific animals – I wasn’t sold. This is just the sort of read you need if you are planning a back country trip as it will help prepare you for all sorts of eventualities. With Canterbury's guidance you will not only prepare yourself for any climate and situation you'll also learn how to use the art of Bushcraft to reconnect with nature in ways you never imagined. A mile wide and an inch deep the book covers all the areas you would need without going in depth enough, for this reader at least, to be confident he would be able to reproduce the desired results.

It covers all the basics from making shelter and starting a fire to catching game and finding medicinal plants. If or when that emergency or disaster comes, people like Dave Canterbury and the Amish will be people you'll want to get to know and learn from. The 23 chapters cover food (purchased and foraged), cooking, fire, tools and utensils (purchased, created, and improvised), living off the land by hunting, trapping, butchering, foraging, making stuff like solar cookers. My only critique would be that a lot of techniques described in the book came without pictures or diagrams. Based on the 5Cs of Survivability--cutting tools, covering, combustion devices, containers, and cordages--this valuable guide offers only the most important survival skills to help you craft resources from your surroundings and truly experience the beauty and thrill of the wilderness. This valuable guide offers only the most important survival skills to help you craft resources from your surroundings and truly experience the beauty and thrill of the wilderness. If anything, Bushcraft 101: A field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival is the foundation upon which a beginning bushcrafter can build the necessary skills and techniques to fulfill their individual purpose and objectives. The whole book is packed full of tips and tricks that are clearly born out of a lot of real-world experience.

With that being said, there were some sections that were a bit too much for me to follow -- primarily the knots and lashings etc. I've been trying to learn how people lived along (not fought) with nature mostly from TV and youtube, latter being the more difficult media to sort out what is "instructive" and what is "destructive".The author not only explains the hows of the skills, tools, materials, and methods he presents, but the whys as well. This book was a New York Times Best Seller when it published, showing the popularity of the subject and the book. Für die nachfolgend beschriebenen Schnitttechniken gibt es leider keine Zeichnungen, nur sehr umständliche Beschreibungen. That being said, this book is like a compressed zip file where each topic is expanded upon by the author's other specialized and advanced bushcraft books that go into further detail. Dave Canterbury is an American bushcraft and survival instructor who is best known for, among other things, the Pathfinder Bushcraft School and Self Reliance Outfitters, his partnership with the knife maker Morakniv and his appearance on TV shows such as Dual Survival.
