No Way Back weaves government conspiracy, drug running, guns deals and revenge killings into a bloody and horrific tapestry. McNeal is your typical flawed protagonist, the characters lacked depth; but - there is a fair amount of 'action' and the plot moves along at a clipping pace. I suggest readers forego based on poor plotting alone much less the repetitive descriptions of internal strife by the primary character, sometimes the same insight appearing immediately following that insight as apparently the author could not decide which version worked best and left them both in.

This winning sequel takes place several years after A Long Way From Chicago (1998) leaves off, once again introducing the reader to Mary Alice, now 15, and her Grandma Dowdel, an indomitable, idiosyncratic woman who despite her hard-as-nails exterior is able to see her granddaughter with “eyes in the back of her heart. I received Long Way Home from NetGalley but discovered it was the second book in a new series, so went back to the first book as I like to start at the beginning if at all possible. After careful consideration, they realized that there were indeed many loopholes in Richard’s words.
