About this deal

I can't remember the last time a book made me feel such an all-consuming, visceral hatred for a character. Vickery is rare as an author who can speculate as to how certain events might actually have felt to those involved, whilst keeping the discussion firmly rooted in the sources and not seeming overfanciful. A. Paris’s credit, she handles the style pretty elegantly, or at least better than I’ve seen in quite some time. Amanda Vickery has uncovered wonderful stories and characters, and written a book that is amusing as it is scholarly.

Behind Closed Doors is both unsettling and addictive, as I raced through the pages to find out Grace's fate. Looking back, I’d say there are maybe two times I had to suspend disbelief, but I didn’t care—the story had me by the throat and I was fighting for breath. There is a tiny twist at the end but it is such a tiny twist that many readers, their eyes heavy with sleep, their brains exhausted by repetition, may miss it altogether.Every time I put the book down I tried to figure out how this horrific monster would possibly be defeated. I’d stopped enjoying the book soon after I started and only hung in there to see if it would improve. I finished Behind Closed Doors about half an hour ago, and my heart still feels like it’s racing, probably not helped by me forgetting to breathe throughout the majority of the book.

The side characters fair a bit better, but they’re not really around long enough to offset the other two. Relying on documents such as account books, journals, letters, inventories and wills, Vickery paints pictures for her readers…Vickery discusses not only the appearance in everyday life in Georgian England but also the nature of the relationships within it… Behind Closed Doors is a fascinating contribution to our understanding of the Georgian period. What Vickery illuminates, often brilliantly, always entertainingly and through a myriad of examples from many different people, are the ways in which family and gender relations were played out in Georgian England. He argues strongly that boardrooms need more female and ethnic minority directors, and pinpoints the problem that underrepresented groups lack board experience and knowledge, something that this book can start to address. In "Behind Closed Doors" -- you can see for yourself by the quote above -how furious an animal lover might be. From the outside, Jack and Grace appear to have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect life. B A Paris has written a really gripping psychological thriller which is head and shoulders above many others in the genre. Behind Closed Doors] reveals in a fundamentally novel way how the language of taste actually functioned for those outside of the well-known literary and philosophical elite in this period.
