About a month ago, I decided to try out the Bissell SpinWave Robot Vacuum + Mop – I already had a robot vacuum that I loved, but the idea of having a robot mop appealed to me too much to pass up! Fortunately, the scuffs buffed out with a clean cloth and some cleaner, but it would be nice to see a more scuff-resistant finish in the future. There are literally dozens of choices when it comes to robot vacuums, and one of the most familiar vacuum brands has released a new vacuum and mop robot; the Bissell SpinWave R5. The first time I used the mop function, it took a few passes across the house before both of the mop pads were saturated and actually cleaning.With spinning scrubber pads and a rotating brush roll, the vacuum will pick up dirt and gunk with ease. On its first test run, the SpinWave vacuumed for 77 minutes on Auto before its battery ran low and it successfully navigated back to its docking station. Since the vacuum doesn’t map your home, you can’t prevent it from wandering into places you don’t want it to go. The SpinWave achieved that result in just one pass, leaving both the laminate in my living and dining room and the tile in my kitchen looking clean and streak-free. While the Bissell app is very easy to use, it’s worth noting that it’s not as tech-savvy as other options.

Once you’ve synced the app with the SpinWave, you’re able to start and stop the mop remotely, and you can also adjust its suction or mopping intensity. At the bottom are a number of buttons to control it such as starting it, docking it, and targeting specific zones. The setup instructions recommend setting the charging station up in an area with 40 inches of clearance on each side, but I set it up under a chair with less than four inches on each side and the vacuum still found the charger flawlessly.

The charging station is composed of two pieces: a base for the R5 to sit on when not in use and the charging bay itself. I watched the robot mop the same 4-inch x 1-inch corner for about 10 minutes before it finally maneuvered its way out to the rest of the floor.

My recommendation here would be that if you’d be relying on this robot for its mopping capabilities, you’ll be a pretty happy camper. It may be expensive, but the iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus might just be the standard that all robot vacuums with mop functionality are measured against. And, that all makes running the vacuum on a schedule tough if you have pets that tend to bring out and leave their toys around or if you use said thick carpet in your bathroom. Your floor will likely be wet and slippery after running the SpinWave in Spot mode, so use caution until it dries.The app first asks a few questions, like what type of mess-makers you have in your home (dogs, cats, kids, and/or other), what needs to be cleaned (bare floor, carpet, stairs, upholstery, and/or car/garage), and what features are important to you (allergen control, eco-friendly cleaning, and/or lightweight products). It offers plenty of control through its app including disengaging the mop functionality for certain zones and setting schedules for regular cleanings. One final note; you’ll want to regularly clean and wash and dry the mopping pads to keep them from just smearing dirt back across your floors.

With the sole exception of the iRobot Braava Jet 240, all the robot mops we tested in our larger evaluation process offer app connectivity, allowing you to control their actions right from your smartphone.
