About this deal

We don't love its temperature control and find some of its usability "features" to be more of a nuisance than a help. Passive coolboxes or coolers are insulated boxes or bags that you keep cool with ice-blocks or frozen drinks bottles.

Outwell have taken particular care with antimicrobial coatings on the EcoCool, and in fact it has been treated with a biocidal glass coating inside – this is a special glass which has bug-killing properties and is a real selling point in our view.If you look at the picture on the Costco listing, only the areas around the dark grey portion get cool, and the top part doesn't get cool. This is a full-on compressor-based fridge which also has a separate freezer section which can keep ice cream frozen! Remember too that they really need to be cooled down completely on mains – when on 12v they’ll maintain the temperature but not get much cooler. Hi-Gear make cheap, dependable equipment and we were impressed with the quality of plastic used on this cooler.

The most versatile fridge available (they’re often included in caravans), but a bit of overkill for a week away in your tent.

The Tropicool TCX range differs from the usual electric coolboxes in that the fan is at the bottom rather than in the lid. One way around this is to purchase an electric cool box which will operate on either mains hookup or a 12V source such as a car battery or power pack to cool your goods down to the optimum storage temperature. Adhering to the concept of health and energy saving, all our products are environmentally friendly, and have got certifications such as CB, CE, GS, cTUVus, C-tick, etc. e. like one you would use at home in your kitchen) is the speed, controllability and power of the cooling on offer. Thermoelectric coolers cannot be set to a particular temperature like on a conventional fridge – they just cool a certain amount, and it depends how high the fan is whirring as to how much cooling is performed.

With the simple wish to make you feel cool everywhere at any time, we keep trying more possible fields in mobile cooling all the time. That’s not a problem if you’re keeping it turned on, but if you’re running on a leisure battery or solar, the extra power needed to keep it at temperature may be an issue for you. They’ll have to do more work in hotter temperatures, of course, which means they’ll run more often but they’re very efficient. If the box can’t hold the temperature, then it has to work twice as hard – and that means more ice-blocks or more power. It's not our favorite of the bunch but it still has plenty to offer for much less than most of the competition. Despite its name, this is actually a 31-litre fridge/freezer that’s high enough to take upright wine bottles and two-litre bottles.

The best thermoelectric coolboxes can lower the temperature by about 30°C below the ambient temperature which means they can be used all year round in the UK. However, they end up doing nothing — the cooler is already more than tall enough inside to accommodate such items and if you're instead trying to stack a bunch of cans inside, those indents make it awkward to keep them standing as you go along. Because yeah, tipping a fridge that should always stay level, and should be leveled and without power for several hours after being tipped, is a brilliant idea. How many times have I heard it fall over and crash in the back seat on a simple road trip on pavement and with normal braking? It’s been kicked around, banged on stairs, knocked over on sharp turns on the road, and sat in a verrry cold garage for a long while. And yet it’s in my truck at this very moment, dutifully keeping my drinks and food cold as I drive from Massachusetts to California. This will set things off with a decent chill en route and you can then use the cigarette lighter socket in your vehicle to keep it cold while you travel. We froze a two-litre bottle of water, left it in the box in a sunny porch and checked on it three times a day. We provide hints and tips about camping as well as reviews of the gear we’ve found useful over the years.
