About this deal

I longed to give it a 5, but not knowing exactly what caused the massive evacuation left me yearning for more answers. Schreiber makes a concise intervention into isolation studies with Alone, writing not about what causes increasing numbers of people to live alone, but about the particular joys of solitude, the warmth of rare bonds of friendship, and the opportunity to contemplate and confront the hard edges of one’s own self .

Drawing on personal experience, as well as philosophy and sociology, Schreiber explores the tensions between our desire for solitude and our need for companionship and intimacy. And Addie, who is grieving the loss of her father, finds solace in her online conversations with Jolene, her biggest - and only - fan. When the zoo director tells her the dangerous animals must be shot to prevent them running amok when the town is bombed, Elizabeth's mother moves Marlene into the back garden to save her… and then the bombs start to fall. Truly discusses a young teen trying survive in an apocalyptic world while dealing with seclusion and loneliness. His beloved master guides him with a firm, steady hand - instilling him with confidence and independence that prove increasingly vital as Christopher learns of a mysterious cult preying on the most learned men in London. The chapters flip back and forth in time and we see the trauma that Meridith faced that led her to her agoraphobia. He mixes personal stories from a life he increasingly lives alone with sharp commentary on the lies we tell ourselves about loneliness – and about love. Age-wise, there are a handful of mild curse words scattered throughout and one pretty grim scene involving a kitten as well as some references to boys, kissing, and some philosophical/existential wrestling with the concept of god/life/death -- all of which I was frankly glad to see; this is an unflinching tale of isolation and survival that behaves accordingly and doesn't talk down to its upper-tween audience. I am generally not a huge fan of novels in verse, but I inhaled this book in one sitting, my heart in my throat, and then sobbed at the end.Spending weeks and months alone, slowly, quietly and close to the ocean surface is to create the world's largest laboratory: an endlessly changing, capricious and startling place in which to observe oneself, the weather, the stars and myriad sea creatures, from the tiniest to the most massive and threatening. Trigger warnings ⚠️ just in case talking about animals starving, dying, rotting in houses after dying and one instance of a guy killing a kitten by wrapping it up and hitting it against something. The bits of information that Maddie can gather make no sense, and there is no one around to ask what happened. Realistic fiction fans will appreciate the thoughtful use of language that hints at Maddie’s introspection and evolution, and survival buffs will appreciate her creativity as she resolutely addresses each new emergency.

I've been waiting for a book like this since I was 10 years old -- a modern-day survival story written in verse starring a moody and courageous heroine and her trusty canine companion? But Alone most especially tells of the courage and resilience that these young people demonstrated before being able to finally obtain a life where threats and danger are no longer a part of their everyday existence. I am sad that it wasn't a 5 stars read because the way it introduced itself in the first few chapters, I was confident this was going to be one of the best books I've read this year, but alas that didn't happen. Hermits and intimacy, the taboo of loneliness and the consolation of friendship – all find their place in a meditation that nods to joy and adversity. Drawing on personal experience, as well as philosophy and sociology, Daniel Schreiber explores the tension between the desire for solitude and freedom, and for companionship, intimacy and love.In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three.
