About this deal

Dr Vernon said: “Over the centuries, parasomnias have had a profound effect on the human imagination, shaping both art and literature. This might also be a flaw, as the book is pretty short, and the author clearly has more interest or at least, more things to say, about some parasomnias compared to others. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Some film analysis is underdeveloped compared to the literary analysis : for instance, concluding that Kon's Paprika and Nolan's Inception is about "the dilemma of technology intruding in our dreams" and "the existential crisis we might face when technology helps us to control our dreams too well" is a little bit weak and doesn't offer anything interesting or new to say about the way those movies talk about dreams and the things dreams can be metaphors of.

This was exactly the type of book I wish I had access to when I first started getting sleep paralysis.Over the next few years she would report from Paris as it fell to the Nazis, London on the first day of the blitz, and Berlin on the day Germany invaded Poland. When aspiring foreign correspondent Virginia Cowles turned up to report on the Spanish civil war in 1937, she was a 26-year-old Boston debutante in heels. Ever since childhood, she’s been prone to “parasomnias” – sleep disturbances that include nightmares, sleepwalking and ghostly hallucinations.

By directly confronting her own strange and frightening nights for the first time, Vernon encourages us to think about the way troubled sleep has impacted our imaginations.AS READ ON BBC RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK IN DECEMBER 2022 **’Curious, lively, humble, utterly genuine … a remarkable debut. Along the way she explores the Salem Witch Trials and sleep paralysis, Victorian ghost stories, and soldiers' experiences of PTSD.

Her anecdotes range from funny (while sleepwalking as a teenager, she told her mother that she needed to take a cake to Gwen Stefani) to terrifying (feeling phantom hands on her neck or dragging her out of bed by her ankles). I just heard Dr Alice (the author) on Radio Wales and her voice was far superior for doing this type of content. Is was really great to not only learn whilst reading but also be entertained and slightly creeped out as well. The book has left me feeling I need more answers about the workings of the human brain, which is a positive outcome. Fascinating and entertaining, I feel like this book nails unpicking the complexity of humans' relationship with sleep in a way that feels relevant and easy to read. These can vary from nightmares, sleepwalking, hallucinations, sleep paralysis and even lucid dreaming - just to name a few.

For insomniacs, the bed is a cruel tormentor; for those of us with parasomnias, the bed is a haunted crypt. A welcome addition to the vast library it cites and celebrates, Vernon's work is a compelling guide to the uncanny grammar of our dread and desire. And in the course of such eerie stories, Vernon proves to be an empathetic guide, too, using humor and quips to bring the horrors to a welcome halt.

The publisher of this book provided free copies of the book to have their book reviewed by a professional reviewer. Famous novels such as ‘Dracula’, ‘Jane Eyre’ and the Brother Cadfael mysteries all make reference to parasomnias, as does Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. All in all, I think this book did exactly what it sought out to do - offer the reassurance that we are not alone.
