About this deal

Besides not swallowing the raison d'etre for the killings because it's just too daft, the manoeuvring of the characters is ludicrous as well. My heart was literally in my mouth and there could have been an explosion in the street outside and I would have been oblivious because nothing mattered more to me at that moment in time than finishing this book. Lording over all of this is DCI Stella Blunt (yes, that is the actual surname that Jackson decided upon) who slams a lot of doors and bellows at a lot of people and does whatever else one would expect from a grumpy DCI in trope-land.

The author is refreshingly disinclined to paint too rosy a picture of this city with its mixture of recognisable growth set against the curse of inner city deprivation, and he achieves this balance perfectly. Another pub I spent some time in is The Beehive, where Cody has a meeting with Dobson the journalist. I don’t really get to read them as much as I used too when I was in my teens, but crime novels is still one of my favorite genres to read. I really enjoy a good British crime novel and I found this very similar to Peter Robinson’s DCI Banks series. Not only was the murder investigation really good, and kept me on the edge of my seat, I also really loved getting to know the main character Cody.

This novel also has the advantage of having a bang on ending, a resolution that rings true and digs deep, resolving and restarting, this is a series that I am adding to my must read list.

A young woman is murdered, and when the police arrive on the scene they discover that she was a police officer. What follows is not a quick death and when the police find her, it is with the dead bird’s wings unfurled and spread across her where her eyes had been, and her cheeks.
