About this deal

The spirit for this whisky has been produced the same way since the distillery was founded in the small fishing town of Oban back in 1794.

Oban 14 Year Old is a superb combination of rich sweetness and smoky dryness with fruity notes of oranges, pears and dried figs, plus hints of sea-salt and peat smoke notes. A bustling seaside resort has grown up around the distillery in the two centuries since it was first built in the fishing town of Oban. One of the last distillery's to operate in the centre of a town, Oban distillery dates back to 1794. To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this. The Oban distillery is one of Scotland's smallest distilleries with just two small lantern-shaped stills. The distillery’s tours offer visitors the chance to witness the traditional craftsmanship of whisky production first-hand before enjoying complimentary drams of the Oban 14 year old West Highland Malt. When I was new to whisky years ago, I first learned of Oban because its 14-year-old single malt was one of the six Classic Malts of Scotland, a selection created by Diageo in 1988 and afterward mass-produced and distributed among on-sale locations across the United Kingdom. If there is any doubt in your mind about the accuracy of the data contained on this page, please ensure you check the product packaging before serving and contact us immediately. Pre-dating the town of Oban, it was originally established in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. From a busy seaside town in Scotland comes Oban 14 Year Old, a Highland malt with some wonderful smoky notes. It is distilled from lightly-peated malt, aged in refill ex-Bourbon casks, chill-filtered, and bottled at 43% strength. A little salty; a little malty; honey sweetness, big orange zest (amongst other citrus fruits); and a lovely underlying smoke that doesn’t really overplay it’s part. Flavours of rich fruits, smoky dryness, honeyed spice, and a whiff of sea salt distinguish this full-bodied Highland malt. A good lingering finish with the orange zest flavour slowly fading out only for the underlying smoke to endure and last a little longer.

Overall A true classic, Oban's 14 year old is a great coastal dram for lovers of lightly smoked, fresh malts.

Would you like to receive occasional messages with information about promotions, new wines, events and tastings? I’ve considered beer for those kinds of occasions, too, but it just feels too heavy in the stomach for me, haha! The spirit is matured in a combination of American oak and European oak casks, which gives it a unique and complex flavour profile. This product is hand packed onsite by Bottled and Boxed, and is not affiliated with any other brand. Oban 14 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky has flavours of rich fruits, smoky dryness, honeyed spice, and a whiff of sea salt distinguish this full-bodied Highland malt. Filling and warming, with the comforting chewiness of rich fruit-bread and hints of orange zest and clove, before growing drier, still minty, with crisp green apple. I went to my liquor shelf for a much-needed dram, considered my options, and decided to look for a whisky that wouldn’t need much thinking, one that I can maybe enjoy while reading a book (this time, for leisure), watching a series, or even woolgathering.
