About this deal

Michael Jackson has only appeared twice: On Now 4, with the drippy 1970s ballad Farewell My Summer Love, and again on Now 88 with the posthumous single Love Never Felt So Good.

The people who are really good at selecting records on radio, on a streaming service or on a compilation album, are very few and far between. In the pre-playlist era, the Now albums were an essential way of staying up-to-date, and even discovering new music. M (Mint): The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse.Virgin Records' owner Richard Branson had given it to his cousin and the company's co-founder Simon Draper several years earlier, and it hung behind his desk at the label's offices. The 48th volume even became a pivotal plot point in an episode of Peter Kay's Car Share, when supermarket employee Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) declared it was her favourite album. Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. In 1984, CBS and WEA launched a rival series, titled The Hits, which focused on big American acts like Madonna, Prince and Bruce Springsteen. The album spent a record 13 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, the most for any multi-artist compilation album since 1963. He also has four uncredited entries as a member of the charity projects Helping Haiti (Now 75), Justice Collective (Now 84), Artists for Grenfell (Now 97), and World Music project 1 Giant Leap (Now 52).

Although downloads and streaming appear to pose an existential threat to the Now series, the numbered volumes still sell in big quantities. The biggest hits to-date from PinkPantheress and Miguel, and debuts from Caity Baser, Mae Stephens, Libianca and Lizzy McAlpine. According to EMI executive Barry McCann, the label was concerned that people would think that double digits would make the series seem outdated, as no compilation series had run that long. The first few albums featured artist montages on the cover, but that practice was abandoned after Now 5, because the track list is often finalised so late that any problems in securing images could potentially delay the release.

VG+ (Very Good Plus): This record has clearly been played before, but has only a moderate reduction in sound quality, despite a possible slight loss of shine and some surface marks. Pop gems from Living In A Box, Brother Beyond and Samantha Fox had to be included, along with the last top ten smash of the 80s for Duran Duran with ‘All She Wants Is’. Blow the House Down' appears as a slightly longer edit, inserting an extra bar at 1'36" which isn't there in the video or 7" version; 'Straight Up' uses completely the wrong edit, halving the intro and the 'do do you love me' break but with a longer outro than the 1989 edit; 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' reverts to the correct single version rather than the shorter edit used on the 1989 NOW 14; 'Belfast Child' remains in its shorter promo edit version; and the version of 'Be My Twin' presented here is a slightly different mix to the 1989 single (but it's slightly too long to be the album version). The series was so successful that compilation albums were quarantined into a separate chart in 1999.Matt Lucas's NHS fundraising track Thank You Baked Potato also appears on Now 105, lasting a brisk 1 minute and 04 seconds). Elsewhere, Fine Young Cannibals step up to the big time with ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ and Sam Brown makes here mark with the excellent ‘Stop’.

Since the vinyl comeback in 2015, NOW Classic Rock and NOW Christmas have been released with some tracks from the CD version. Baby One More Time and also featured Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much, Moloko's Sing It Back and Steps' Tragedy. It was the first album in the series which did not chart in the UK Albums Chart as the UK Compilation Chart was created in January 1989. This March 1989 compilation is something of a mish-mash and documents the changing music scene in the UK in the late 1980s with Yazz, S’Express, Inner City, Tone Loc and Neneh Cherry representing a new wave of artists which could be loosely grouped in the dance/hip-hop/house/acid house genres. Hit tracks from Kim Wilde and Sam Brown are up next, plus Driving Rock from legendary Roy Orbison with ‘You Got It’. She was just nine years old when Whip My Hair featured on Now 78 (2011); and had to wait more than a decade for her second appearance, with Meet Me At Our Spot on Now 111 (2022).
