About this deal

In truth a pair of pants can weigh more than a laptop, so one fewer makes room, though I usually have no trouble with room in the photo backpack I carry on board as my “personal item”. I found the device genuinely useful as a mobile backup solution that allows me to check my files wirelessly on my iPad. Used a Lexar 2933x 64Gb XQD card with about 950 photo’s of D850, about 50-55Mb/each – thats about 50Gb. To measure the potential speed of the SSD in a more formal environment, I performed speed benchmarks using both my MacBook Pro laptop and my Windows 10 desktop PC, both using USB 3 cabled connections.

This means that MacBook users (as well as PC users with only USB Type C ports) will still have to use adapters to connect to My Passport Wireless SSD, which is unfortunate. In addition, without the RAW file to edit on my iPad, I’d not be able to make effective edits to white balance, nor really dig into the file’s data. What’s nice about the My Passport-series devices, is that you can preview RAW files from many different cameras when using the WD My Cloud app. Hi Nasim – Up to now I have travelled with MacBook Air and an external SSD for processing/storage – the Mac Air is getting old and slow and I am contemplating replacing it with iPad Pro coupled with a WD Wireless My Passport SSD.Combined with the VLC app, you can watch pretty much any kind of video file, and I'm now no longer confined by the limited storage left on my iPad and can take enough stuff on the SSD so I’ll always have something to watch no matter how long the trip. The only thing I don’t like is the size – at about twice to three times the size of an equivalent power bank, this is not a small device to carry around, and it takes up more space in the camera bag. I’ve found that it will charge an iPad mini or one of the batteries from my Fuji X-T2, which just adds to it’s usefulness in the field.

Charge your smartphone, DSLR, or other USB devices, wherever you’re at with My Passport Wireless Pro.Taking these capabilities and running with them further, the My Passport Wireless drives can also be used as DLNA or Plex media servers, wirelessly streaming content to compatible players like smart TVs, and their batteries can also be used to charge other devices over USB like phones. It seems like lots of digital products offer media storage and streaming these days, so to make it a bit easier for you to understand the role of the My Passport Wireless SSD , I’ve outlined a few specific usage cases below. After all, you can’t ingest photos to a laptop when the lid is closed, meaning it has to remain open for the entire process. You simply turn it on, insert the SD card into the slot in the side, then press the SD button and the drive starts to copy the data on the card.

To compare the connection speeds, I connected my MacBook Pro (13in / late 2013) to the drive first via a shared access point, second with a direct 5GHz wireless connection, and third using a direct USB 3 cable. When you throw in the ability to ingest and stream media, the cost of the My Passport Wireless SSD is largely justified.I ended up disabling that option and decided that it would be better to kick off the backup process manually, which reduced chances of my data not getting backed up. The exceptions are high-end cameras which support FTP over wireless, such as Canon and Nikon’s pro bodies with the appropriate wireless adapters.
